Metallica Whiskey/Hetfield in Rehab

A reporter recently pressed Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett on something that's puzzled me for a bit: How do Metallica reconcile marketing their own brand of whiskey considering frontman James Hetfield's past and present struggles with alcohol? Hammett said...
"You can't compare the two things. James' struggle to get dry is a completely personal matter mentally and emotionally.
"The fact that we produce, bottle, and sell alcohol is totally independent of this.
"It is completely up to you whether you drink or not. And I think I can sell what I want. If I were a diabetic, that wouldn't mean that I couldn't sell sweets."
An interesting take. I'm a fan of the band and recognize their right to do as they please, but the whiskey tie-in did strike me as odd given Hetfield's issues. What's your take on this?

They should definitely be marketing a non-alcoholic whiskey brand.

Kirk has it right. They aren't related, IMO. If anything, it makes Hetfield even more bad arse.

It's just branding. Whoopty-do. Ask Gene Simmons what's his take on it.

I couldn't give less of a frick what aging rockers do with their spare time and money. I hope they make a good product and it brings them happiness.

Metallica went from the most Alpha and relevant heavy band in the world (despite boasting 2 certified pansies on the roster) to irrelevant by:
1. Declaring war on their fans using some bizarre, archaic 20th Century notions about IP, and
2. Making that awful "we never should have done this" documentary film which exposed the warts that never should have been exposed during their active period
I haven't really considered them a musical force since then, other than the occasional playing of the One video on Youtube when the mood strikes me.
What they do to make money now is beyond irrelevant.

The Black album pretty much ended my fandom of Metallica.

Blackened Whiskey launched in 2018 and by mid to late 2019 Hetfield was in rehab. Before that he was previously sober for 15 plus years. Now I’m not saying the 2 are related but there are a couple tuning room videos of him enjoying their product.

I guess because I was slow to warm up to them - I didn't really get it until ...And Justice for All, so I was okay with the Black album and even Load/Reload, Garage, Inc., S&M - I was cool with all of that. They got older and the music evolved - I didn't consider that selling out, I don't guess.
Lars' crusade against Napster, Some Kind of Pussies and St. Anger were the final 3 nails in their coffin for many folks.

They are a corporation and corporations exist to make money. Whiskey is very trendy so slapping their name on it potentially brings in a lot of money. I doubt the band members had much input on the development or branding of the whiskey other than to look at it in a meeting in a conference room.

I was a fan since Ride the Lightning. With the Black album, they lost any sort of edge they had. It's a commercial pop record.

He probably has a line of Kiss Chastity Belts and Purity Rings.

I've been a fan since I saw the Puppets tour on a VCR in 6th grade. I can't really get into the Black Album either but I really like The Outlaw Torn and Bleeding me off of Load. Other good tracks on there too and Death Magnetic is solid.

I'm thinking Heatfield is fine with cashing the checks
