For Whom the Bell Tolls
Creeping Death
One

man, it's hard to limit it to just 3. I can easily do 3 from each album through the Black album

Curious what everyone's top 3 Metallica songs are?

1. Four Horsemen
2. Call Of Ktulu
3. To Live Is To Die
3. Orion

Obviously, I love their instrumentals.

I would go with:

...And Justice For All
Master Of Puppets
Ride the Lightning
Kill Em All

but only if I had to rank them.

Haven't seen anyone mention this, but get Garage, Inc. I got it when it was a CD and came as a double set.

Contains a bunch of b-sides and one-offs from throughout their career from early 80's to late 90's on one CD. The other is a bunch of covers from their favorite songs.

Covers include Whiskey in the Jar, Turn the Page, Astronomy (my favorite on the album), Sabra Cadabra, and more.

The first four albums are classics, and Master of Puppets might be the best metal record of all time. And Justice for All is a great album ruined by a terrible mix, made out of the grief of Cliff Burton's death. They took it all out on the new bass player which is both awful and totally understandable.

I don't hate the Black album as much as most. It is a pop record, but it's a fricking GREAT pop record. It's like James Hetfield woke up one day and he was suddenly metal's answer to Paul McCartney. I know that sounds like an insult, but it's not. That album is catchy as hell and has killer riffs.

I'll even defend the Load albums on a good day. Their new stuff is nowhere near as good, but they are also nearing the 40-year point of existence. I give any band a pass for slowing down in their later years.

It is a pop record,

I don't understand this idea at all. Justin Bieber and Katy Perry are pop. Metallica is not. If you're calling the black album pop, then Appetite for Destruction and Back in Black are pop too. People are just pissed they didn't keep making Master of Puppets over and over.

So to go along with this, what are some similar bands from the 80s that I can listen to similar to early Metallica?

I'm not a megadeth fan and I did download some Slayer and like what I'm hearing.

Listen to Exodus, Testament, Suicidal Tendencies, and Anthrax. I don't know why people are saying Pantera. Their 80s material doesn't really sound like Metallica. All their best work was in the 90s.

I'd swap Ride for Master.

You just have to be old enough to appreciate Kill em All. The rawness of them as a band at that point and rawness of the recording date it a little bit. That will be the difficulty for the OP. Like trying to listen to Led Zepplin 4 on an original production year album and scratchy record player. After you've heard CD caliber clearness it is hard to hear Bonhams drums and not hear that bass pedal squeak.

Just try to remember the greatness of the time. And what ALL other hard rock and metal was in 1983. The speed compared to what was out was faster than death metal compares today. BUT without the fricking Cookie Monster vocals, and all musicians are able to be heard with Metallica. Not the wall of sound, distortion, and angry bees you have today.

Similar bands...

Not really similar to the REAL Metallica (pre-1991 and Bob sucks Cock Rock) but I can recommend a few of their contemporaries that you would appreciate:

Overkill: The Years of Decay and Horrorscope
Testament: The New Order
Possessed: The Eyes of Horror
DRI: Crossover, Thrashzone and Three of a Kind
Death: Spiritual Healing and Human
*Exhorder: Slaughter in the Vatican
Corrosion of Conformity: Technocracy and everything with Pepper singing after it
Stormtroopers of Death: Speak English or Die

Just a few mentally going thru my CD books...

*If you like Pantera...

ETA: I didn't include the obvious Big 4 and Maiden cuz already mentioned.

ETA II: Overkill, actually, Feel the Fire, frick You, Taking Over and Under the Influence ALL have Bobby G on them, and Bobby G + D.D. Verni ARE Overkill.

Do yourself a favor and listen to this Coroner album. It's prog like a mofo, but OMG the talent these 3 had is astounding even today:

Mental Vortex (1991)

That's fascinating about Justice and how different it sounds. It's so damn raw. It's like they just left the lead guitar and vocals on and turned up Lars' drums.

Rex Brown from Pantera has talked about listening to AJFA with James and Lars right before it came out. He said something to them about not being able to hear the bass and they just laughed about it. Apparently it was all a big joke on Newsted. James and Lars were huge dicks back in the day.

I dunno, the latest album is pretty damn good and they were certainly not slowing down when they played Houston a couple weeks ago. They are still killing it live.

I hated St Anger and thought they might be finished after that one.

Saw them in concert back in 2005 and they kicked arse. Knew they still had it. James even played to the crowd and asked if they wanted to hear new stuff or old stuff. Blew the lid off the place with boos when he suggested new stuff.

I liked Death Magnetic. Not really digging Hardwired to Self Destruct, but some of it is growing on me. A little.

No way in hell the Black album is pop music. It is not old Metallica and has more hooks for sure but in NO way pop. If you want other similar and great 80's thrash I would start with Testament and Exodus.

edit
Top 3 songs
1. One
2. Fade to Black
3. Seek and Destroy
