The first 4 are in another league compared to the black album. Whatever the best song on the black album is can't crack the top 3 on its predecessors.
It's not pop, just popular.

Kill 'Em All was wonderful and actual thrash.
Lightning was underrated and overlooked.
Puppets was considered their masterpiece. I can't really argue with that.
Justice was their harshest, heaviest record. Lars' best studio performance. He was actually a capable drummer at the time.
Black was a very good record, but it's success absolutely made Lars lazy, and he basically quit practicing for a long period of time. The band took too much studio time off after Black.
The Load record horribly received. But was actually a good record 5 years after release.
Reload was a questionable album, lyrically speaking, but had some really nasty riffs hidden in it. If you can delete James' voice in the tracks, that album is badass.
St Anger was one of the biggest question marks of the modern age. Lars = bullshite.
Death Magnetic meh..too much ground to make up and this one missed the mark, imo.
Hardwired - finally some creativity used in a Metallica record, like the old days when they were angry and hungry.
Eta: I wish Lars would retire and Dave Lombardo would join the band for the rest of their days.

Most of the commentary in this thread is excellent.
Really appreciate the love for the instrumentals too. To Live Is To Die is gripping. You can run the gambit of emotions with that song.
It's said they performed it live only once in 2011.

The demos for Reload are better than the album itself. The album was a little too happy and slick but the basic songwriting was still good and the demos showcase it better.
Speaking of demos I don't know how many people who aren't hardcore fans have heard this, but originally Sanitarium and Orion were one song, slightly different lyrics, worth a listen

In that order. Don't care much for any of their others, though Black is tolerable.

So to go along with this, what are some similar bands from the 80s that I can listen to similar to early Metallica?

and damn, was there not a more crisp distinct sound than Dimes guitar? Genius
Seriously. Solo wise, there are people that are more technical, and faster(maybe) but what separated Dime from everyone else was his tone. Plus, his technique, speedy, and general grove. All that mixed together is hard to beat, and even harder to emulate.
