They were originally called Mookie Blalock, but 10 is a reference to the number of surfing titles won by Kelly Slater.

Another one - The name of Alice in Chains' current singer William Duvall's former band is Comes with the Fall. They are named after a scene from the movie Rosemary's Baby.

Jimmy Swaggart called rock n roll the "new pornography" in a televised sermon. Hence, the New Pornographers.

Modest Mouse...

quote:

Their name is derived from a passage from the Virginia Woolf story "The Mark on the Wall" which reads, "I wish I could hit upon a pleasant track of thought, a track indirectly reflecting credit upon myself, for those are the pleasantest thoughts, and very frequent even in the minds of modest, mouse-coloured people, who believe genuinely that they dislike to hear their own praises.

Why don't you make the reference instead of shaking your head at us?

Grateful Dead were the Warlocks. Phil Lesh said he had seen a record in a store by The Warlocks and they didn't want to steal the name.

They were sitting around an apartment in Palo Alto trying to come up with a name and Jerry opens a dictionary. He looks down and sees "Grateful Dead" on the page and that was it.

toad the wet sprocket pairs two things i love...the band and monty python...they're one of my favorite bands, but i've always hoped for a song featuring electric triangle

They are my favorite band. I read on Wiki that when one of the Monty Python guys heard that name on the radio after one of their songs played he almost crashed his car

In 9th grade a group of kids would play music at parties and wanted to sound hard and badass. After taking a freshman English class and learning about the cool word for demon, Incubus was born.

I've read this story for Flight of the Conchords on their website before. Not sure if there is a bit of truth or all a joke (leaning towards joke)

quote:

On the afternoon of the gig they realised they needed a band name. The initial list of names included Roxygen Supply, Albatrocity, and Tanfastic. But the final name was chanced upon in a series of events that went something like this: Jemaine went to the bathroom and noticed the flat toilet was called the Concorde, he returned from the bathroom to suggest the name Conchord, and Bret said “What about Flight of the Conchords”, and Jemaine said “okay”, and Bret said “okay “, and Jemaine said “okay then” and Bret said “We should go to the gig, we’re late”.
