I love his version of Brown Eyed Girl as well
He does a pretty good "Another Saturday Night" too.

Quite literally, Buffett is broadly known for only a handful of songs - and Margaritaville is most certainly - by a wide margin - the one most known and most associated with him throughout the culture.
Margaritaville isn’t a bad song, and I wasn’t putting it down. But it’s like Metallica and Enter Sandman. Most casual fans would call that their best known song without diving too deep into the material.
Margaritaville is the bell cow commercially for him, but from a writer’s perspective, he has some really good tunes out there that never got airplay.

Street cred confirmed, dude. No blue hairs are going to come gunning for you now!
Sweet! Get to check that box off!

Following recently that he has health issues that were very tightly guarded, I had some bad feelings. I had a few discussions with friends who I knew were also big fans and I came very close to saying "you know it's gonna suck when..." and I'd always catch myself before I actually said it. It's inevitable for everyone, but I never wanted to imagine it happening. So many memories associated with so many of his songs, and not a damn one in the bunch. I'm still not sure I've really processed it. Short of losing a parent, this one is definitely the toughest.
You are either a fan, or you werent. If you are, this is tough.

quote:Yes, although Metallica has a lot more high-charting songs. I would also put Enter in their top 40!

I have said it many times. If you are listening to Jimmy for Margaritaville, you are not getting it

It was a relatable down-on-your-luck breakup tune, and probably opened the ears of many fans. Hopefully they kept digging into the Americana, Gulf and Western stuff… and for any of y’all that follow Charley Crockett on social media, he did a helllll of a write up on Buffett, using that term Gulf and Western.

Relatable if you are a boomer or Generation X. Everyone else listening to it is wondering what the hell is a pop top?

Some of my favorites have already been mentioned — Havana Daydreamin’, Tin Cup Chalice, In The Shelter.
But, I’m sure surprised my all time favorite hasn’t been mentioned yet — Savannah, Fare You Well. Incredible tune.
Jimmy, Fare You Well.
Savannah, Fare You Well

The keyword in my statement… “It WAS a relatable ….” Good chat.

I always liked his rendition of "God's Own Drunk" wasn't his song but he did it great

I quit trying to figure out what category Buffett was in. I eventually just figured he was in the Jimmy Buffett category. He doesn't really fit any where else

Last time i saw jimmy in Toronto we took a 8' inflatable shark. Had seats about 40 rows back. During fins we inflated the shark and sent it on a mission to the stage .... it made it, not quite to jimmy but was on the stage :)

Oh, he was country. He just did it his own way.

Saw him at the Gulf Coast Coliseum right after it opened up. He had broken his leg and sat on a wooden stool all night with and without his guitars. At one point, he was all by himself, the band took a break as he played on.
I bet it was from this tour. Here is a show from the 1978 tour, likely near the same setlist: Jimmy Buffett Live Show Audio 1978

Love this song--Lovely Cruise
One of the songs to play at the service after my own passing.

Yes, there is the criticism that JB wrote songs that were formulaic, and in a way that was true for some of his work, but they made people happy. But the deeper cuts, the way he told stories and painted pictures in just a few words, it really can be said he is unrivaled.
Exactly. Some deep musings, great melodies on all those deep cuts. Some of my favorite ones:
The Night I Painted the Sky
Coast of Marseilles (written by Keith Sykes)
I Have Found Me a Home
Sending the Old Man Home
Creola
When the Coast is Clear
Survive
The Oldest Surfer on the Beach
Slack Tide
I could go on and on...
But to the average person, IYDKYDK.
