As I've posted before, "Yacht Rock" was for people who wanted to party like a rock & roller, drug out like a rock & roller, but not actually listen to rock & roll.

Well, I was likely 7-13 years old, so I’ve never thought of it in those terms.

I was around the same age, so I didn't think like that then either

Though even then, I realized they were different from the big rock acts like the Stones or the Who

My basic point still stands: YR is for people who want to listen to Rock Lite

It was a web series on very early YouTube that gave it that moniker as a joke because they always envisioned some rich guy on a yacht chilling out to it.

So YR joins that club of terms that began as a joke/insult and was later adopted by its targets, along w/Cowboy, Quaker, and Disc Jockey

There’s a bunch of yacht rock bands that tour. The best is Yacht Rock Revue., but there are other good ones.

Check them out if you can.

You either like the music or you don’t. The moniker is irrelevant.

Like every genre, there is good music and bad. I like a lot of it, but not all.

You don’t like the Doobie Bothers?

I disagree. That someone would listen to something called "Yacht Rock" is fascinating to me. There seems to be a self-deprecation in it, whether conscious/intentional or not

I can take or leave them. I don't consider them YR anyway

YR is James Taylor, Liinda Ronstadt, CSN, the Stevie Nicks FMac... YR is essentially the child of The Kingston Trio & the Great Folk Music Scare (a number of YR figures began as folkies). Like the original Folk audience, Soft Rock fans did not want to hear loud power-chorded/distorted electric guitars. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but YR also ended up removing much of the vitality of R&R as well, like when Nashville took the redneck energy out of honky tonk country.

That someone is so insecure that they care about what a broad category of music is called, and use it as a factor in whether they listen or not is fascinating to me.

The issue is what you consider to be yacht rock. There are some obvious choices, but it can very much be a matter of personal opinion.

On one occasion, when asked about yacht rock, Christopher Cross told the interviewer, GFY…

Correct. The label/name should mean little in music. The question should be:

How does it make you feel? Further, much good music should make you move, whether it be dancing, swaying, or tapping your foot, etc.

I literally got into the Grateful Dead at an older age because I was randomly listening to a playlist and I just liked the way some songs sounded sonically. I wanted to find out who it was, and that started me down an unending rabbit hole.

Yes there is something soothing about it. Especially getting older in life. I went and saw Christopher Cross and Toto this summer. Great concert. There were people there wearing captain hats and Yacht rock tshirts.
