Is U2 one of the greats?

When you put longevity, sales, worldwide popularity, critical acclaim etc together they probably deserve to be.
But they seem to have so many more haters than the traditional heavyweights like the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin etc. In 30 years will they be remembered in this category?

No, they had 2 or 3 solid albums then a bunch of pedestrian crap

Probably, though they really haven't done much in the past 25 years of note.

Neither have the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Beach Boys but they are considered in the elite.
U2’s first decade was outstanding for quality, which seems to be enough for 60s bands in particular.

It really was.
Creativity runs out after a while with everyone though.

I gotta say yes, even though I'm not a fan of their later work...

I like U2, but they're not in the least bit groundbreaking like the Beatles, Stones (via cultural appropriation), and Zeppelin were.
Their early albums from the 80's were deeply connected with the time they were produced and were fantastic.
The ones after Achtung Baby in 1991 were disconnected and not very good. IMO
Rich people can't make good music.

Of course they are. The fact that some people don’t like their latest work doesn’t diminish their accomplishments

No Line On The Horizon was solid, and that was just a few years ago.

Or the fact that Bono can be a preachy douche. I'm a U2 fan but Bono is a preachy douchebag and I think that's why they get most of their hate.
Let's face it, they were the college rock of the day like REM pushing the left leaning causes. If REM was still relevant I could only imagine the hate Stipe would get now. It would be 3x as bad as then too.

Absolutely one of the greats. But, just like Springsteen, once their name is mentioned here the hate comes out. Whether you're a preachy douche or not doesn't diminish the art. And at least Bono has accomplished a lot through his causes.
However, this is about music. Their run of solid music throughout the 80's--in the age of hair metal and new wave synth-pop/rock--from "Boy", "War", "October", "The Unforgettable Fire" to "The Joshua Tree" and even a bit beyond was remarkable. The Edge was a new sound on guitar, and Bone was a unique voice. Hard to dismiss them.

I think this is why the hate exists. Their actual music is pretty good.
This might be unpopular, but All That You Can't Leave Behind and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb were solid for 20+ years into a career and had some decent songs.
It just is really rare that people sustain greatness for 20+ years. Some of the all time greats have newer stuff that doesn't compare to their beginnings.

Bono is the damn GOAT he makes me nut every time i listen to him

Hell no!!! U2 sucks arse

Everything after Achtung Baby is complete garbage.

I get nostalgic for a time when the idea of being considered "one of the greats" was an insultingly mainstream notion and no self-respecting alt-rock entity (or it's fans) would admit to giving a flying frick about such a thing.

I never liked them, but if I had come of age during their early years I might have felt different. I can't imagine it with how much I dislike their overwrought earnestness, but who knows.
