Is there a more plastic piece of dreck than Cher’s ‘Do you believe in life after love’?

Listening to this as background music in a store today I realized just how often I hear it as background music in stores or dentist’s offices etc.

At this point, who wants to hear this song and why is it still being played so often?

Welcome to Target

Yeah I haven't listened to any top 40 shite since I was probably 12.

But that song comes on in grocery stores and I fricking can't stand it. Turned off that damn "under the banner of heaven" series cause thats how they wanted to start it off.

Isn’t that the song which introduced the world to autotune ?

Yes. Autotune was originally used to correct pitch when needed, this crappy song was the first one to use it purposely as an "instrument"

quote:

The effects on Cher's vocals were achieved using the pitch correction software Auto-Tune. Auto-Tune was designed to be used subtly to correct sharp or flat notes in vocal performances; however, Taylor used extreme settings to create unnaturally rapid corrections, thereby removing portamento, the natural slide between pitches in singing.[10] Taylor said it was "the most nerve-wracking part of the project", as he was not sure how Cher would react.[6] She approved and insisted the effect remain when Warner wanted it removed.[9] In an attempt to protect their method, the producers initially claimed it was achieved using a vocoder.[10] The effect was widely imitated and became known as the "Cher effect".

Never thought about it but that is absolutely a staple of dentist office radio stations/playlists.

As is that "Unwritten" song.. Natasha Bedingfield I think

I never liked that song and hated the auto-tuning. It's actually my first memory of someone's voice being incredibly auto-tuned.

"Plastic" is a perfect way to describe the song.

The song that really hooked me into REM in the 80's...how times have changed.

It's pretty damned terrible, yes. I've always considered it some kind of unofficial LGBTQ break-up anthem. It's rotten.

One song I can think of that I despise even more is the Kid Rock track set to the tune of Werewolves of London where he references other songs throughout. If cancer made a sound, that would be it.
