Deadheads having heart attacks with this thread. The truth is that GD were a group of great musicians who put together mostly boring music. They do have a few great songs, but the rest is simply boring, uninspired drivel

I think you could say this about a lot of bands that produced more than 5 albums.

That is what makes a band like Led Zeppelin so great is that it is hard to find something that is bad off of the first 4 albums. The rest had good stuff.

Van Halen is very similar, but in fairness their ablums are filled in with great covers.

So similar to the Grateful Dead, The Beatles or the Stones for every 2-3 great songs on an album there were 3 average and 4 stinkers.

You don't "get" the grateful Dead after a "first listen."

If I counted off bands after a "first listen" then I would have deprived myself of some of my favorite music.

Thread summary on page 5 - for GD and music in general - thanks FunkyTide8

I love the dead today but didn't "get" it at first. I also didn't "get" some of my other favorite bands today on first listen. I'm going through and cleaning out my CD boxes right now and noticing a bunch of CDs/Artists I didn't get back 20 years ago but listen to on Spotify on repeat today.

Great thread. Jerry's solo stuff really got me into the dead. The 1991 Jerry Garcia Band self-titled album got me through some rough points in life - I shall be released (YouTube)

I listened to a Dark Star once and wrote them off, listened years later because my college roommate was a big deadhead and became obsessed. I'm not obsessed with them anymore but I still listen to them a good bit and go through phases where I binge them a bit.

I was thinking abotu this thread earlier and wanted to bump. First off, I've never been a jam band guy. Not hating on the genre by any means it's just not my cup of tea. Listening to a 15 minute instrumental jam session just doesn't really grab me. My only very small exposure thus far to GD was just that, long and rambling jam sessions. So I've never really cared for them or even given them a second that.

Anways...recnetly I decided to start checking out a bunhc of CDs at a time from my local library and getting more familiar with music I haven't been as exposed to preiouvlys. I saw GD's American Beauty and actually thought of this thread so figured what the hell. I gave it a listen and really enjoyed it! I think the person who compared theri studio work with a mcrib couldn't possibly be farther from the truth if he tried. The reason most people probably dislike GD is for the same reason I mentioned, that it's too long, too directionless, doesn't connect. A studio album is the exact opposite of that; it's tight, controlled, to the point, not rambling. Just good music with normal song lengths.

To the OP that started the thread, I don't know if you mentioned specifixcs in here or not but I'd suggest giving American Beauty a listen to give them another go.

I can't think of a single GD fanatic that I've ever known that wasn't a complete and total loser.

You might need to pay attention a little more. Deadheads are all around you my friend. Don Henley let you know this in 1984 - "Out on the road today, I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac"

The GD suffer from all that you say, but there are live recordings with long jams that are still concise, and even though totally improvised will restate the central theme just when it’s needed, almost like orchestral score. The Allman Bros Band live at the Fillmore recordings have some of the best examples of this. That was my first exposure to long improvised music. I loved it, and thought the GD would be similar, but it failed to move me in any way.

listen to Euro 72, Ladies and gentlemen...the grateful dead or Cornell 77, if those don't interest you than the dead probably isnt for you. Since you are an allmans fan check out L&G, its as close to a bar band as the dead got (to start just jump to Not fade away>going down the road feeling bad)

The allmans are a far tighter band, had Duane and berry lived on they probably explore more space but dicky took them more in the cowboy direction. Duane was a huge fan of Jerry Garica/dead . This blog has a good write up on the two bands interactions over the years

I've heard about five or six different Dark Stars that were absolutely incredible. I've heard thirty or forty that were absolute garbage. Generally one of my least favorite Dead songs but there are a few that spin you upside down and inside out. Other than Drums/Space there is nothing less likely to turn someone on to the Dead than a bad Dark Star.

Couldn’t agree more. I think only acid burnouts could like it.

I've never been a huge fan either, though I don't dislike them. Some of it just lacks the structure that I think is important, but that's why a lot of people like them.
Funny thing happened 3 or 4 years ago though, I went to a friend's house and he had some guitar music playing, I honestly thought it was me, just picking something random. I asked him, "when was this?". He looked at the screen on his Sirius and told me when it was from. It was Jerry Garcia from something. I didn't say anything, but I was pretty surprised about that.
