Beethoven and Mozart are more trendy picks but Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and St. Matthew's Passion are the highwater mark for any genre of music.

He didn't mention trains, prison, trucks or being drunk, how can he be the greatest?

There are many who would put Lennon and McCartney up there with Mozart and Schubert, who had an enormous gift for melody, the essence of songwriting. Not too many people out there humming Bach tunes, though he certainly was a genius and is enjoyable to listen to.

Baroque,
the mold.
Shattered,
the world.
Then
simply over did it.

I agree that JS Bach is the best of the bunch. Good post.

Mozart could write every genre of music that was around when he was working. Operas, symphonies, masses, you name it, he could do it.

His solo stuff is OK, but the first few Skid Row records were the bomb.

Lennon/McCartney...end of debate.

And he did it all in less than 35 years. His complete works comprise over 600 pieces and is contained on 225 cd's.
That said, Vivaldi is one of my favorites.

If i'm compiling a greatest songwriters list, neither Lennon nor McCartney nor the combination thereof cracks the top 1,000.
And I'm neither kidding nor trolling.
"Man, the Beatles catalogue still sounds timely even after all these years. Hey, do me a solid and put "Hard Day's Night on repeat for a couple hours" said no one, ever.

Tchaikovsky Pyotr was punk in the 1800's.

And like clock work, the boy band shills enter.

It's perfectly ok that some of you have an unhealthy contempt for the beatles. Just accept also that you contrarian fricks fall far outside a practically universal critical acclaim and popular opinion
But I also get that that's the whole point
