If Garbage Released a New Album and No One Listened, Did It Make a Sound?

Checked out their new album after seeing a few Shirley Manson "edgy" news items and a curiosity to hear what the band was up to these days. After a listen, I can report back that Garbage, growing into their name, sounds like warmed over dookie. The music itself sounds ok, sonically. You can tell an effort has been made to sound "current." Manson's vocals and lyrics ruin any attempts at producing a decent song, however, with attempts to be edgy through silly profanity and defiantly middle-age issues. I couldn't identify a good track on the entire album. Maaaaaaybe "Hold," which would just qualify as decent filler on much a better album.

As an example, here's a single, "Chinese Fire Hose," from the new album raging against ageism with lyrics so sophomoric and on the nose as to be truly cringe.

I never thought they were that good outside of maybe their 3 big hits. Even then, those songs were just decent pop songs from the 90s. Nothing crazy special IMO.

Im struggling trying to remember what those were... I remember they were kinda big for a minute, but I didn't really listen to that kind of music...

Their first three albums were all excellent to good - Version 2.0 is pretty fricking amazing. And Shirley Manson was the sexiest woman alive for a while.
I saw them at Shaky Knees a few years back and they were pretty solid - although Shirley Manson dropping a Doctor Who reference in her stage banter is the sort of stuff that's custom made for me.

Their first album was legit. I remember when the first single from their debut album hit in '95, I was all in. Several quality, much more successful singles from the album followed with "Queer," "Stupid Girl," and "I'm Only Happy When it Rains." They went on to record the theme for the Bond movie The World is Not Enough.

"I'm Only Happy When It Rains"

"Stupid Girl"

"Queer"

I always liked them but the problem with having a hot female singer is that they stop being hot.

Same thing happened for me with Lana Del Rey when she got fat and Fiona Apple when she got methy

I saw them open for Blondie a number of years ago. I'm not a fan of them but it was a decent performance.
