I don’t understand how Kurt Cobain’s hand was holding the barrel of the shotgun

when he was found dead.

The barrel on the type of shotgun that he used (Remington Model 11) travels back into the receiver when being fired. It would be almost impossible for a strong man to keep a grip on that barrel when the gun went off, much less a dying stoner.

Dude this is so crazy. I was thinking the exact same things. In 1994.

the barrel doesn't move on a Model 11...the bolt moves

It was Dave Grohl..

He was tired of being behind the drumkit and wanted to be in the spotlight.

You have caught him in your snare.

Nah.

The Model 11 is the same action as Browning Auto 5. The recoil pushes the bolt and barrel back. At the rearmost location the barrel unlocks from bolt and travels forward freely, forced by the spring under the forearm. The bolt moves forward a moment later and pushes the next shell into the chamber.

Source: I just rebuilt a Model 11.

ETA: Maybe it would be possible with a super firm grip to get the barrel to unlock from the bolt before it travels back into the receiver? Dunno, it would take one hell of a grip though

That's not a recoiling barrel.

Yes it is

That’s a Remington Model 11 Sportsman, in 20 gauge.

It has a Cutts compensator installed on the barrel, probably by a previous owner.

Kurt said it plain as day…”No I don’t have a gun”.

He lied.

OK, does it even matter though? There is a shell chambered, ready to fire.
Just like a Sweet 16 right? If there is a round in the chamber, it's ready to fire. The tension is already there, waiting to release the firing pin at the pull of the trigger. At that point, it's just like a single shot with the hammer cocked.
Pull the trigger, the round goes off and that begins the rest of the cycle to load and ready the next round, using the recoil(instead of gas) energy of the round just fired.
It would be hard to shoot yourself twice, without the stock being anchored, it probably won't cycle properly, but the first time would be easy( mechanically speaking).
As far as holding on to the barrel, I've had to shoot a dead squirrel a couple more times before, to get them to fall out of the tree, because they had a death grip.

If you haven’t, watch “Soaked in Bleach”. Pretty interesting.
