DUDE!!!

This is one of my favorite lyrics of all time

I've been covering this song a lot lately, and I try to let that lyric simmer on the audience for a moment

It is really case by case for me.

Birth Ritual by Soundgarden. Love the music. But it is like he purposefully wrote a song to not be understood.

But lyrics are very important.

i remember phil collins saying SUSUdio didn't mean anything it was just a made up word that sounded good in a song.

Collins has said that he "improvised" the lyric.[4] Collins was just playing around with a drum machine, and the lyric "su-sussudio" was what came out of his mouth.[4] "So I kinda knew I had to find something else for that word, then I went back and tried to find another word that scanned as well as 'sussudio,' and I couldn't find one, so I went back to 'sussudio'", Collins said.[4] According to Collins, the lyrics are about a schoolboy crush on a girl at school.[4]

I guess if i was into metal or punk or something along those lines i could see that.

I never have an issue hearing what the singer is saying and a lot of times if i cant make a word out, i end up looking up the lyrics.

this was my thought on a lot of the 90s alternative type songs that were supposed to have a "message" yet the singer garbled through the lyrics and no one knew wtf they were saying.

right.

For instance I love the Deftones, I have no idea what he is saying almost all of the time but I love the music.

Did you hear "laurel" or "yanny"?

Lyrics are those annoying things that interrupt guitar solos.

I suppose that's probably what makes music such a universal thing.

I guess I'm in the middle.

They're important. I appreciate good songwriting. Stupid/lazy/try hard/cheesy song writing annoys me, even for artists I like. For example, Jason Isbell ("Maybe it's the fire in my little girl's eyes").

But lyrics don't have to be obscure or deep or beyond the grasp of the average listener. Certainly, I don't like artists where the depth of songwriting is supposed to carry the the entire package.

Then I won't be listening. That's not to say all music has to have words. And love to listen to jazz, D.Grisman, jams and all manner of non-vocal music. Just that (for me) if the song has words they have to be comprehendible. Which is a big part of why 'rap' has never done it for me.

Just wish I could remember the words verbatim, but it's just not my thing for some reason. Which really sucks because I can play some pretty decent guitar, have a passable voice (people like), easily stay on key no problem even getting the intonation and guttural nuances spot on, but have the hardest time recalling the words.... Strange, considering their importance.

Its a bit of both.

For the most part I agree that it’s the overall sound I like to listen to.

But...

Really good lyrics can make a huge difference and turn a good overall sound into one of my favorite songs.

And, really bad lyrics have made me just hate an otherwise good sounding song.

Any song I listen to besides a country I find some of the lyrics not comprhendible.

Radiohead is one of my favorite bands, in almost all the songs I can't comprehend what York is saying, I would need to bust out the liner notes.

Lyrics aren't a deal-breaker for me, but good lyrics can definitely elevate a song.
