How much do you pay attention to the lyrics in music and how important are they to you?

The lyrics are not a big deal to me.
I've never been able to really hear the lyrics in songs, I've always just treated the song as an overall sound and thats what I'm paying attention to.
Other people on the other hand pay attention to the lyrics over all things.
Listening to music is about the overall sound to me, I don't really care about the meaning of the song.

quote:I'm like this with a lot of my favorite music. There are songs i like and have heard 100 times that i still don't know the right words. With early REM, I could not care less what Stipe was saying.

But then there are some songs that I like because the lyrics are just so cool to me. Chances are, I would like the sound of the song anyway, but the meaning is a double bonus. Or, maybe single bonus.

One of my mom's biggest gripes with music is whether or not the lyrics are intelligible
I tend to agree with her. If I can't understand the lyrics then the artist sucks.

Is it psyched lone ranger or cyclone ranger?

Extremely
However I can't think of a song that I know all the lyrics, but individual lines and meanings are extremely important

It depends on the music. For example Steely Dan lyrics are often very clever and full of nuance. As AlxTgr said, REM's lyrics are usually meaningless.

But the wire, the wire turned to lizard skin. And when he climbed it sagged.

weird, I'm the exact opposite.
I just can't understand what the singer is saying most of the time.

The one I just quoted was wrong in my head from the 80's until just now.

For the most part, the vocals are merely another instrument. Occasionally I will find an artist where the lyrical meaning is of interest and importance. That is however separate from the role of vocals in the music itself.

Rarely the first thing that gets my attention, but often keeps me coming back to it.

I've got my spine. I've got my Orange Crush.

Lyrics won't completely make or break a band/artist for me, but good ones make them so much more enjoyable.

this is how my brain interprets the vocals and lyrics.
its just another instrument to me, the words are just jumbled together to make a sound.
I never put an album on and listen intently to whats being said, all I hear is a sound that I love. The words are lyrics are just jumbled together to make a sound to me.

Lyrics are very important to me.
They make most songs.

Lyrics are damn near the top of the list for me.
Music is art, good lyrics are like poetry and another form of art.

They're the single most important element of a song for me. There's plenty of songs that I love that aren't that great if you just casually listen to them.

For the lyrics are important people, please list your favorite acts.

for the most part, the actual lyrics don't matter to me. although sometimes i'll hear a catchy line that sticks with me and makes me like the song more.
"it doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you"
"By becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you"

the problem with me is that I can never understand what the lead singer is saying with all the other stuff going on in the background.
