Gotta love him. IMO greatest country music writer of all time. And a very good musician.

Favorite lyrics: They say time changes all it pertains to
But your memory is stronger than time

GOAT. Hands down, my favorite of all time. If I made a playlist of my top 100 songs, at least 40 would be Merle songs.

"Silver wings shining in the sunlight. Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight."

Even though none of the songs were hits, his Jimmie Rodgers tribute album "Same Train A Different Time" is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Several of the songs from that album:
California Blues
Miss the Mississippi
Women Make A Fool Out Of Me

the song was written from his father's POV FWIW. I don't think that's how he really feels.

Not his hit, but a great song from a great album.

love some Merle...

my favorite

Fightin' Side of Me

I hear people talkin' bad,
About the way we have to live here in this country,
Harpin' on the wars we fight,
An' gripin' 'bout the way things oughta be.
An' I don't mind 'em switchin' sides,
An' standin' up for things they believe in.
When they're runnin' down my country, man,
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Runnin' down the way of life,
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.
If you don't love it, leave it:
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.
If you're runnin' down my country, man,
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.

Most of my life, I've almost been a winner.
I've come so close but never really won.
Just when I thought I finally made it,
I found myself back where I started from.
I hate to say I'm giving up but I believe,
Losin's just become a way of life for me.
Losin' wouldn't be so bad at all,
But I'm always on a mountain when I fall.

Then you came along and had me, had me believin',
For once in my life my luck had finally changed.
And now you say you're gonna leave me,
Seems everything I do winds up the same.

I hate to say I'm giving up but I believe,
Losin's just become a way of life for me.
Losin' wouldn't be so bad at all,
But I'm always on a mountain when I fall.

Losin' wouldn't be so bad at all,
But I'm always on a mountain when I fall.

also love *though not his own lyrics*

Sometimes at night I think of old lovers I've known and remember how holding them made me not feel so alone

I listen to Merle Haggard "iheart radio" at least 3 days a week at work. Get a good mix of him, patsy cline and other classics .

Mama Tried is one of my favorites of all time. Obviosuly one of his more popular but I love that song.

My dad is coming in from Dallas (visited me once at LSU and this will be his first time to visit me in NOLA) and I told him to come in that weekend. Surprising him with ticket to the show.

He's been jealous of me ever since I saw Merle open for Bob Dylan about 9 years ago when I was in high school. I'm pumped, love Hags.
