re: "Heavy" songs, that describe deeply meaningful, or burdensome topics. Real stuff.

quote:
The name she gave was Caroline
The daughter of a miner
And her ways were free, and it seemed to me
That sunshine walked beside her
She come from Spencer across the hill
She said her Pa had sent her
'Cause the coal was low and soon the snow
Would turn the skies to winter
She said she'd come to look for work
She was not seekin' favors
And for a dime a day and a place to stay
She'd turn those hands to labor
But the times were hard, Lord, and the jobs were few
All through Tecumseh Valley
But she asked around and a job she found
Tending bar for Gypsy Sally
She saved enough to get back home
When spring replaced the winter
But her dreams were denied, her Pa had died
The word come down from Spencer
So she turned to whorin' out on the streets
With all the lust inside her
And it was many a man returned again
To lay himself beside her
They found her down beneath the stairs
That led to Gypsy Sally's
And in her hand when she died was a note that cried
"Fare thee well, Tecumseh Valley"
The name she gave was Caroline
The daughter of a miner
And her ways were free, and it seemed to me
That sunshine walked beside her

Lead vocalist, Taime Downe, has kind of a child-like voice. The speaker in the song is a neglected kid. Downe’s voice makes you picture the kid singing the song. It’s very effective.

The lonesome oak tree held its fire into November
He watched the last brown leaf hit the ground and blow away
An evening gunshot lets him know the hunt is over
A familiar cold moves in somewhere between snow and rain
Just last spring you know his heart was burning
before his Lynnville love hit the road to chase her dream
Now he thinks of her each night and in the morning
he laces his coffee cup with whiskey instead of cream
Her story is she's changed her mind
She just can't help herself
She wrote "Please don't meet me at the Lynnville train, 'cause I'm coming in with someone else"
He's a quiet man, the neighbors say
but his pain won't go a way
So for better or worse he's going down
to meet the Lynnville train
He blew a tire on the road to the station
He jacked it up and thought out loud "She never should have let me down."
Just six months ago she vowed she was leaving
Now she's coming home with a stranger to settle down in Lynnville town
Her story is she's changed her mind
She just can't help herself
She wrote "Please don't meet me at the Lynnville train, I'm coming in with someone else"
He's a quiet man, the neighbors say
but his pain won't go a way
So for better or worse he's going down
to meet the Lynnville train
Steel wheels scream, the whistle blows,
his heart is breaking
She steps onto the platform, her new love by her side
He reaches in his coat, his hand is shaking
The time has finally come, this really is goodbye
His story is he's changed his mind,
he just can't help himself
So he's getting on board the Lynnville train
and moving on to someplace else
As the train pulls out he watches them both
standing in the pouring rain
He's headed for a new life down the line
on the Lynnville Train
For better or worse he's leaving town on the Lynnville train
He watched the last brown leaf hit the ground and blow away
An evening gunshot lets him know the hunt is over
A familiar cold moves in somewhere between snow and rain
Just last spring you know his heart was burning

Hollow by Pantera was one of the first that came to my mind.
Of course I thought heavy had a double meaning but it's still a great pick

Hurt by NIN, particularly the Johnny Cash version.

And to your Townes:
To Live's to Fly should be on here too. Hell, most of the songs Townes wrote.
quote:
I'll bid the years goodbye, you cannot still them
You cannot turn the circles of the sun
And you cannot count the miles until you feel them
And you cannot hold a lover that has gone
To Live's to Fly should be on here too. Hell, most of the songs Townes wrote.

Thanks, love John Prine. Here's a volley, both Tammy Wynette and Johnny Cash recorded it.
In an Appalachian, Greyhound station
She sits there waiting, in a family way
"Goodbye brother, Tell Mom I love her
Tell all the others, I'll write someday"
From a teenage lover, to an unwed mother
Kept undercover, like some bad dream
While unwed fathers, they can't be bothered
They run like water, through a mountain stream
In a cold and gray town, a nurse says "Lay down. This ain't no playground, and this ain't home"
Someone's children, out having children
In a gray stone building, all alone
From a teenage lover, to an unwed mother
Kept undercover, like some bad dream
While unwed fathers, they can't be bothered
They run like water, through a mountain stream
On somewhere else bound, Smokey Mountain Greyhound
She bows her head down, hummin' lullabies
"Your daddy never, meant to hurt you ever
He just don't live here, but you've got his eyes"
From a teenage lover, to an unwed mother
Kept undercover, like some bad dream
While unwed fathers, they can't be bothered
They run like water, through a mountain stream
