Grateful Dead "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead"

I've been going through my Dad's CD's. I used to dislike the Grateful Dead but these are both interesting albums. I like the lyrics and the harmonies are good.
Bear's Choice, on the other hands, is awful.
Slowly going through these CD"s (and in some cases LPs) is interesting. Dad had a lot of cutout LP's, and about 20% of those cutouts are from obscure groups who have at least one good song on the album.

That album is fantastic, IMO.

I particularly liked "Brokedown Palace" and "Box of Rain."

Also, one of my favorite lines in a song is in Truckin'.

Both are masterpieces if you’re looking at GD studio albums (never their strong suit). Both were released in the same year too, 1970.

Nah, that album is awesome. Katie mae, dark hollow and black peter being the highlights.

Robert Hunter was an amazing lyricist who had an incredible way with words. His lyrics can be deep, yet simple at the same time.

they are the only to albums that have dead songs that prefer the studio versions; for example, easy wind, dire wolf, friend of the devil, box of rain.
Compared to wake of the flood and Blues for allah side 1, which are loaded with dead songs I love but I couldn't be bothered to listen to the studio recordings.

but seriously, yeah, both of those albums are absolute classics. What caused you to dislike the Dead previously? What kind of music do you like in general?

I know the dead fans dislike this one, but in the dark is their best album.
I dont like the live recordings, imo everyone ive heard sounds like shite.
My second fave is prob shakedown street.

To each their own, but if i was ranking the deads studio albums these two would be in the bottom half.
The production on shakedown is super cheesy and dated.
In the dark has some great songs, but they all sound better live.

Brokedown palace hits home. Great song.

part of the charm. also some Lowell George's last work
It’s just so clearly influenced by too much cocaine

If I never hear Tons of Steel again in my life, I'll be more than ok with that.

We all have David Crosby to thank for that. After they played on his albums, he got them realizing they can sing/harmonize on their songs.

Those two albums then Europe 72 are the beginners guide to the Dead imo. Always my recommendation when someone asks me where to start.
