What are some bands that you think are good bands but are either very underrated or have a bad reputation/not respected?

I’ll start with this example, Winger. A lot of people kind of dump on them for being a “hair metal” band and that they were picked on by Beavis & Butthead. They look at the way they dressed and their hair, which was of course the style in the late 80’s. A lot of people either ignore or don’t realize the amazing musicians that the guys in Winger are. Very tight band, great songwriting, the lyrics on their first couple of albums were not outstanding, but the songs were filled with hooks and incredible musicianship. I feel like, if you just go by their music and not the looks, there are a lot of good things to be said. Here's a song that really showcases what they can do, their cover of “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix on their debut album.

Purple Haze

What are some examples you can think of?

Kingbob, I get that’s your opinion and that’s fine. I feel like you can’t deny they are great musicians if you really sit down and listen to them. They don’t sound like every other hair metal band, there is a lot more to their sound.

All the hair metal bands had great musicians. I just don’t think Winger’s songwriting chops are especially good (lyrics are super cringe). If Warrant was the Nickelback of Hair Metal, then Winger is the Hanson. Autograph was pretty bad too.

And it’s not like I just hate that genre or era either. Cinderella, White Lion, Dokken, Firehouse, etc are all excellent, in my opinion.

I'm not sure if I could identify a Winger song, but I'll confess I'll get in the mood for some Poison, Crue, or other classic hair metal, and I think a lot of them are underrated musically because the image was so distracting. It's mostly just fun rock and roll, with a few melodic ballads mixed in.

There's some classic rock station in Corpus that I caught doing a hair metal block while on the highway, and it got me into jamming out to the old stuff again.

The guys in Winger were some of the most musically talented of that era & still today. But the cheesy image, videos, & songwriting obviously did not hold up.

I definitely get that. I really feel like they embraced what was the popular look at that time, they were following trends for sure. They shed all that by their 1993 album Pull, but I think it was a little too late by that point, the perception was there.

Interestingly enough, Kip Winger has has done some work with classical music in recent years. If I remember right, he's received a Grammy nomination for some of his classical compositions.

Hanoi Rocks

They were a great RnR/Punk/Glam band from Finland, that inspired a lot of the 80s Hair Metal bands and often times get lumped in with them...

Lol. Apparently you have no idea who Kip Winger is and how extensive his songwriting and performance career is. Here's one of his classical pieces being played by the San Francisco Orchestra.

Being able to write classical music and being able to write catchy rock songs with meaningful lyrics are two entirely different skillsets. A lot of the aspects that make a rock song great will make a terrible piece of contemporary concert music, and vice-versa. I will never disparage Kip as a musician, but I will, deservedly, criticize him as a rock n roll songwriter.

I've listened to your music. Kip has written for and played with the best in the business. You criticizing his songwriting is laughable.

I didn’t say I was better. I’m not famous for good reason. I only have myself to compare my work against. Winger was one of the biggest bands of their era, meaning their work is held up against some pretty serious competition. With that competition and profile comes scrutiny. I don’t think they hold up against their peers at the time. Were they, much like the rest of hair metal, unfairly maligned in the 90’s? Maybe, but I really don’t think the music from when they were popular holds up. Their 90’s stuff is better, but still isn’t as good as the prime acts from when they were popular, nor is it even the cream of the crop of 80’s bands with 90’s albums.
