George

Glenn

Two great songs.....it's difficult to compare these two styles.
Both were legends in their own way.

George is widely considered as one of the best, and often times the best, country singer of all-time. It’s jones by a mile. I can think of at least 10 country artists more influential (and better?) than Campbell.

Jones
Haggard
Hank Williams
Roy Acuff
Patsy Cline
Bob Wills
Willie Nelson
Waylon Jennings
Johnny Cash
Loretta Lynn
George Strait
Conway Twitty

Now, recall, Waylon was also the guy who tied Jones to a tree on at least 1 occasion.

(I believe) Shooter tells the story in Mike Judge's "Tales from the Tour Bus", but after pissing Waylon off for something, Waylon ties him to a tree. Jones protested, "I'm the greatest country singer alive!" Waylon responded, "Well, now you're tied to a frickin' tree."

I never knew people considered Campbell a good song writer. Wasn't he criticized for using poor material?

Those are what I call first tier country artists, the legendary category. Regardless of what someone thinks of Glen Campbell, he is still in that first tier category. I think we are talking a bout singing and musical talent, not just commercial success.

The only artist on that list that had a better singing voice than Glen Campbell was Patsy Cline. The rest are good but she was in another league.

I don't he was. I think Merle said that his music selection wasn't very good but I don't remember the quote.

George Jones.

Glen Campbell is pretty awesome and has a handful of absolutely beautiful songs, but George Jones is in a league that very few are in.

Agreed, I didn’t think this was even debatable.

The Possum is in his own stratosphere

Huge fan of both guys, but Jones had the better voice for traditional country.

Campbell was more pop country...much better than today’s pop country...but not traditional by any means. His interpretations of Jimmy Webb’s songs were amazing.

But man could Glen ever play that guitar. Just effortless. He was huge session guy before he became a celebrity.

Glen Campbell isn't even worthy of sharing the stage with the Possum! Sadly there will never be another George Jones, especially since real country music is no longer written or preformed by today's so called "country artist."

Glen Campbell made some country music.

George Jones IS country music.

Glen Campbell on guitar though.

This sums it up. Apples to oranges really.

Comparing a singer-songwriter like George Jones to a musician-entertainer like Glen is kind of like comparing Larry Csonka to Barry Sanders.

Compare George Jones to Merle, Waylon, Willie, Johnny.

Compare Glen to Barbara Mandrell.
