Agree.
Album of the year possibly. And it's so different from metamodern!

I've listened to it 3 times now....It's really incredible...
You think these songs are going in a certain direction, but then detour to a place you never would expect....
He's like the David Bowie of Alt Country/Americana

How are you guys feeling about this one compared to his first two?
It continues to grow on me. Sturg might have the highest replay value of anyone I listen to.

You can see his progression throughout, and it has led up to this record. The others were very good, and I would consider Meta a "great" record, but......This one is better than anything he has done.
The success of Meta has allowed him to expand and grow as a musician and it is very clear throughout the record. The layers of horns and strings, the arrangements, and lyrical content are just incredible...He has hit a grand slam with this one.

I think it might have the best flow of any; but it lacks the super high points that Metamodern had.
Like that Howl in It Ain't All Flowers, where it then goes into a psychedelic solo. Chills, man.
Or in Just Let Go which had that perfect combo of country/psychedelic. That build up in the Promise, which is one of the best covers I've ever heard. Long White Line makes me feel like I'm flying on a goddamn eagle high as shite. I'm a sucker for psychedelic stuff, though and I had never heard it done like this in country music.
This new record works extremely well to listen to all together, but I'd be lying if I said I don't miss the psychedelic parts, which are less frequent on this one. The brass is fantastic, though. I think I do already prefer this over Hightop Mountain, but it'll take time to see if it can surpass Metamodern for me.

Turtles All the Way Down made Metamodern my favorite country album of the past 30 years.
Listening to the album now, really digging the arrangement. I love that he doesn't pigeonhole himself into a certain sound...everything is so authentic.
Bought tickets for the Chattanooga show next month!

I think it's good. Not as good as Metamodern. I think he tries a bit too hard with the cosmic shite. And I think the In Bloom cover sucks. That's what I think after a couple listens.

It's hard to pick a favorite from that record.
Just Let Go, Ain't All Flowers, The Promise, Long White Line, Turtles, Life of Sin, Living the Dream and Voices are all A+ tracks IMO. Just let go into It ain't all flowers is such a fantastic combo, favorite part of the album to me. Pan bowl and A Little Light aren't on the level of these, but also aren't tracks I feel the need to skip over either. I don't think he has any skippable tracks out of all 3 albums.
I have to get tickets for either Houston or Dallas somehow

its definitely crazy the changes from Hightop to MetaModern to Sailors...shows how good he is...true artists are versatile imho

The change in the style of the album is a bit of a practical and a bit of a technical decision on his part.
He wasn't prepared for Metamodern to be as well received as it was. He'll admit to you that they cut the album in 4 days total after he found time to get into the studio.
So to an extent, the buildup here to the follow-up album is such that he decided to write a set of songs to his son, which he's conflicted about missing the early years while on the road and doing this music thing. It's a personal album and has nothing to do with any of his previous music from what he's said.
In this way, he can retain some authenticity and doesn't have to worry about measuring up to Metamodern. Which is where his if you like it you like it if you don't then WTF ever is coming from.
I expect something far more interested on his next album TBH.
Having said that, the sonic differences are from a change up in production. Not only did he use a label for this album for the first time, he went away from Dave Cobb as Producer.
If you like High Top Mountain and Metamodern, go look up the guys he's working with. As a Producer, Cobb is pioneering that new-alt-country, retro-outlaw-country sound. Unrefined and raw with some Outlaw mixed in.
Great, great stuff.

yeah I knew about Cobb....I know he was involved with Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton...
I have read the interviews where he stated what you are saying about the results of Metamodern and this one being for his boy and all...my versatility comment came from the idea that 20 years from now he will have more albums with different sounds coming in from different genres and influences and we will see how eclectic his brain is...its already showing with these three....think The Beatles...they were all over the place from the first pop/rock crap of the early years through the end...they brought in horns, did weird psychedelic stuff, did straight up rock songs etc....its because of how amazing they were and how they weren't confined by one thing...I see that in Sturgill...not sure if that makes any sense...they may not be the best comparison

Didn't Sturgill say a while back that he was only going to do 5 albums?
Posted on 4/8/16 at 3:41 pm to CocoLoco
He mentioned it on a Joe Rogan podcast about a year ago. He just did another Joe Rogan podcast a week or so ago.

Nah. It's great, but the first album is the best

Depends what you are into. HTM is more traditional country and bluegrass. Metamodern blended so much shite and its high points are fricking incredible. I have both on vinyl, and I love both albums, but Metamodern is already and all time favorite. I probably spin it at least once a week.

I hope he does more than 5 albums. That would be sad if it all ended there!
