I was listening to the Billy Joel channel on Sirius this morning and he had a segment on R&B artists. He played a couple of Ray Charles songs that fit this topic.
His background girl singers were The Raelettes and they were effing great.
"The Night Time Is The Right Time"
"Leave My Woman Alone"
"Hit The Road Jack"

Gram Parsons/ Emmylou Harris
Emmylou Harris makes everybody sound good when she's singing with them. I don't think anybody does that better than her.

A Fool Such As I - Rodney Crowell & Emmylou Harris
The Rock of My Soul - Rodney Crowell & Emmylou Harris

How About The Great Gig In the Sky?
Phenominal. But I don't know if I would say that is background vocals. Maybe I misinterpreted the thread. Nonetheless, The Great Gig in the sky is simply amazing to me.

The album Buckingham Nicks definitely comes to mind.
They swapped lead vocals throughout the album, but what a great album !
One of my all time favorites. Better than any of their stuff with Fleetwood Mac, but that's just my take on it.
And Stevie looked so good back then...

Damn it, I knew there was something I was missing in my last post.
St. Dominic's Preview-Van Morrison(Janet Planet (aka Mrs. Van Morrison at the time), Ellen Schoer, along with Mark Springer on backup vocals)
Street Choir-Van Morrison (Janet Planet, Ellen Schoer, Martha Velez on backup vocals along with Larry Goldsmith, Andrew Robinson, and Dahaud Shaar)
Crazy Love-Van Morrison(Judy Clay, Emily Houston, and Jackie Verdell on backup vocals)
One more thing from my first post. After I made the post I was digging around on Wikipedia and discovered that Clydie King passed away a couple of days ago.

"I Think I Love You", Partridge Family w/ Shirley Jones feat. David Cassidy. (#1 Billboard, 1970).
The perfect pop song, in every way possible.
