I think it goes like this. "Obscure" >>> more popular. It's always been like this, even in the 70's.

Not necessarily, but majority of what's of a higher quality isn't in the mainstream. I mentioned a few mainstream acts I find to be very talented. But for every Jack White there are 10 artists like Luke Bryan; cliche, dull, soulless and dumbed down. But as stated, it's fine for people to like that. Majority are just casual music listeners.

Regardless of how most people view it, from my perspective all music is art. If it's crappy music then it's simply crappy art. This is probably an idea that I need to explore more, but I think that most if not all creative processes are artistic to an extent.

I don't really have a passion for wine. Really I get many of the different types mixed up. I would say that I have poor taste in wine compared to some connoisseurs, although I could develop good taste if I devoted myself to learning about it.

Music and wine are not analogous. There are strict rules governing wines. There is very little subjectivity.

Music and other art are subjective by definition and by necessity. Who is to say that the guy who likes N'sync is less of a connoisseur than the guy that digs The Jayhawks?

That implies strict rules governing both bands simultaneously.

It is completely stupid to suggest such absurdity.

Lots of people have average or shitty taste in music. My friend says this the whole music is subjective, blah blah blah, to me all the time (even though we have the same taste in music), well no shite it is. I can respect musicians and their talent and not like their music. I also like a bunch of shitty and average music, but it doesn't hurt my feelings when someone says that and in fact it makes conversations with my friends with differing interests to be able to tell them or have them tell me something sucks

Mainstream musicians are more popular for their image than their music most of the time.

Yes, absolutely. How else would you explain the following for a singing contestant from television? I think that what you are looking for here is what separates some of these as artist versus performers. The artist are head and shoulders above the average Joes.

How am I supposed to know when someone has poor taste in something? What criteria should I use? You seem to know so it would be great for all of us if you'd share this info.

. I'm thinking some folks have missed the concept of art. People like music for a variety of reasons. Some are just more engaged in music than others.

I'd say that is having poor taste. You throw names out like Sturgill Simpson, and these Florida Georgia Line fans couldn't tell you who he is.

I KNEW WHO STURGILL SIMPSON WAS BEFORE ALL OF YOU DID.

TRUTH

It is one of the reasons I stay away from the Music Board.

Heaven forbid you like an artist that gets radio play. . .because your taste becomes instantly shitty.

Silly hipster vag wringing.

There are songs I like, which I understand aren't appreciated by the hundreds of Anthony Bourdains, Alton Browns, Pitchfork writers and NFL executives we have in abundance on TD. I may like because they remind of of a pleasant time, or a pleasant someone.

To say someone has bad taste you would have to understand why they appreciate a certain piece of music, art, food, etc. I can't stand the music my oldest daughter listens to, but it means something to her, which is good enough for me.

Wow, you are really reaching there...

And the wine analogy makes no sense. Palate and taste are two different things. Just because somebody has tried every wine in the world doesn't mean anything in regards to "taste." That person could still prefer Boone's Farm because he likes the taste. The same could be said for music.

I think some of you confuse the word "taste" with something that it's not.
