Great band. Knoplfer is great at setting a mood, he's a real underrated songwriter.

Still, Romeo and Juliet is near perfection.

Romeo and Juliet is great.

Down to the Waterline and So Far Away are damn good, too.

"Brothers in Arms" was the soundtrack to the GOAT Miami Vice scene.

Saw them play live on campus in '80 in an auditorium that I can't remember the name. Of course some rednecks booed when they played Les Boys. Great concert otherwise.

I will just add 2010 Bacobens Rock Top 500 has 3 Dire Straits songs listed:

# 167 - Money For Nothing
# 264 - Sultans Of Swing
# 436 - So Far Away

Check out So Far Away

Same here, it really holds up. I loved it when it came on the radio in 1979, the guitar work was just unlike anything else. And the lyrics, and vocals. Just a really fun, well crafted song.

That first album was just so fantastic, and as much as I love SULTANS OF SWING,DOWN TO THE WATERLINE,is really my favorite.
COMUNIQUE was a great album too,LADY WRITER..great song. It seemed to me that their sound changed a bit after those first 2 albums,I'm not sure, but I think That may have been when Mark Knopfler's brother(rhythm guitar) left the band. Does anybody know if this is right? I know the internet can tell me,but I would rather ask real internet people, might even get some opinions thrown at me that way.

Knopfler is a big fan of Tony Joe White.

He actually did a special on TJW. Here is a snippet:

,you know what? Knopfler was really the producer( for all intent and purpose) of Bob Dylan's Infidels album, and those licks sound like I AND I to me.

I wish Mark Knopfler has a sister,so I can wedge my way in. Any of y'all have any family details?
