Van Halen

Yep

Eddie asked Darryl to take over lead singer spot when the relationship with David Lee Roth broke down.

Darryl turned it down.

Imagine that

There were also some talks with Patty Smyth (Mrs. John McEnroe since 1997, but at the time Mrs. Richard Hell and 8 months pregnant).

The reason Sammy got the gig is because he and Eddie shared a mechanic. Since Sammy had that somewhat infamous BB512 that spent more time on a lift than it did on the ground, the rest, as they say, is rock and roll history.

I guess he said, "I can't go for that. No can do."

Yeah, they knew Sammy from the beginning.

Sammy was the lead singer that they originally wanted but they brought in Roth to audition and eventually went with him.

As things got bad between Roth and Eddie etal, they started looking around to have him replaced and among the ones they talked to was Darryl Hall who admits that he gave it some serious consideration.

Now I want to hear Daryl sing some Van Halen tunes so I have an idea of what that would have been like.

eh, doesn't really seem like a good fit. I Love Hall's voice but, I don't know how that would have worked.

Same. Jamie's Cryin' or Unchained wouldn't sound right in a Philly soul style.

Van Halen

There are several stories about Ed talking to many different people about singing in VH (Hall, Smyth, Steve Perry). It seems to me Ed was in a bit of a panic about what to do when Roth left. Hall would have been an awful choice for VH. Not that he can't sing, his voice was at it's peak about then, just would not have been a good fit stylistically. Plus, why would Hall leave his group where he had great artistic control and 15 top 10 singles, for a band with 1 top 10 at that time?

Yeah, Daryl’s just too smooth for a hard rockin’ band like VH. That would’ve been a bad fit.

Would've been worth it just to see Daryl do a flying roundhouse to pop a balloon

Or possibly "Leave me alone, I'm a family man."

From one ego in DLR to another in Hall. I think Darryl has calmed way down from those days

I’m going to leave this here. It’s not Van Halen. But if you like Hall and Oates and/or Nine Inch Nails, then you should give this a listen.

That was my first thought. Hall and Eddie would've killed each other almost immediately. Imagine Eddie trying to coach Hall on something, it would've been a legendary band fight

Eddie should have just called the “original”; Jim Dandy himself

Jim Dandy would be such a close resemblance that no one would think DLR left. He has the same look and voice like a twin.
