Cross Canadian Ragweed and Stoney Larue HOB in NO in 2007. I had never heard of Stoney before and they blew me away. I've been a bigger fan of them than Cross ever since, and for the record Cross put on a good show that night. Stoney and Cody's acoustic portion was amazing.

i just started watching the 'clockwork angels' DVD today for the first time (late x-mas arrival in the mail).....first rush tour i missed since their semi-retirement. geddy's vocals might not be as sharp as years past, but i tell you what: in a live setting, few bands can play at such a high level, young OR old. geddy's vocals notwithstanding, IMO rush sounds like they still have gas in the tank for several more years, unlike many heritage acts.....

Tame Impala, the Tabernacle ATL 2013.
Saw them there in June and since the concert was the day after they played Bonnaroo and it was one of their last shows of a tour throughout the U.S. I thought that it might show. It didn't and they played with a lot of energy and sounded great

THE SEX PISTOLS (The Kingfish, Baton Rouge, 1978)
I expected a shite show for $3.50, but what I got was pure unadulterated rock and roll! Sid was basically in a coma with "gimme a fix" scrawled in marks-a-lot across his chest but still looked agitated, Steve Jones right hand was non-stop metering out the power chords and Johnny was his rotten self. My ears still ring to this day.

It was 1975, got talked into by a friend from the east coast, to go to a concert at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre (then called the Theatre of the Performing Arts) in NO. Had only heard a little bit about the artist. After watching a 3hour plus performance, I just knew the guy was about to break it big. Bruce Springsteen.

1. Ian Moore - Grant Street Dance Hall. 1999 or 2000. Can't remember. Wasn't expecting much. I had seen him five times prior and his shows were good, but this one he was "on". Played a longer set than usual too, which showed he was feeling it. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen.
2. Mars Volta - HOB NoLA - 2008. Just The Mars Volta. No opening act. Again, was just expecting a good show. Get to HOB and find out that it is just TMV, no opening act, and they were about to go on. They start the show with a 11 minute version or "Roulette Dares" and go from there. 2 and 1/2 hours of musical bliss.
3. Going to give a shout out to an opening act here. Deftones show this past March at the Varsity. Periphery opens. Never heard of them until the day before the show. Distant relative recommends I listen to them. I pass. Sure as shite the next night they are opening for Deftones. I make the show early to see them open. Completely blown away. Their CDs do their live show no justice. VERY talented musicians. Amazing guitar work. They were great live.

Agreed with the G Lee vocals opinion. He sounded, at times, like a wounded banshee. He can still jam the strings out of that bass.
Also, open up with something else besides "Spirit of the Radio." I know, I know....how dare I think such. Also, anything they played post 1994 I could have cared less about. I am likely not alone there and they played a bit too much of it in 2011.

I used to think the exact same thing. Luckily for me, I wizened up some on that account. Everything since the 'Vapor Trails' album has been pretty fricking awesome.

Mine is Journey because I went in expecting it to be extremely cheesy and annoying but it was a surprisingly decent show. I think it was because they were very self aware that every Numbskull there wanted to hear Don't Stop Believing but they played that song as well as tons of others pretty well.
It was a Journey, Cheap Trick and Heart show. Heart was by far the best and I thought Cheap Trick was terrible. They were like a Nickelback from the 80s.

I went to HOB NOLA to see the headlining band In Flames quite a few years back. They were amazing of course but the little lesser known band Children of Bodom stole the show. I don't remember exactly what it was but the intensity they brought was crazy.

I think it was 2007, but I went to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Raleigh, NC and they had Gnarls Barkley open up for them. Wasn't expecting a whole lot out of them, but holy cow what a fun, energetic, and overall great sounding performance.
