Saw them three times in the 80's/early 90's. They were better than just an 80's pop band. TIGHT musically, driving rock beats. Great under-rated band, at least until Michael Hutchence died.
Biggest surprise for me? Boz Scaggs (a name some of you young'uns probably don't know). Was never really a fan, and then sometime in the 90's he was a last minute fill-in on the Gentilly Stage for a cancellation. He played all blues with a great band, hitting some of his old hits along the way. Said he'd only got them together the week before due to the last second nature of the gig. Great show.

Went and saw Yonder a few years ago for a buddy's birthday, I didn't know any of their songs but was blown away at how talented they were

Cowboy Mouth and Better then Ezra at the Ascension Bicentenial Fest. I had never hear Cowboy Mouth before and I didn't realize how many songs I knew from Better than Ezra. Also, I had been bummed out by not getting to go see Chevelle at Groovin' On the Grounds which was going on at the same time (my brother was there).
Johnny Winters at Jazz Fest, Ho-ly Crap what a performance. Blew me away.
Jet at the Varsity was great and so was their opening act Crash Kings.
Hawthorne Heights at the Varsity, I had never seen them live and hadn't heard anything from them in like 6 years. I had fairly low expectations, and they blew me away.
Trombone Shorty at Jazz Fest 2010, I'd never seen him play before and it was amazing.
Anders Osbourne at Jazz Fest 2010, Another that I was seeing for the first time.
Rush at the New Orleans Arena 2011, I had high expectations and was absolutely blown away. I am now a full on Rush fan.
Flight of the Conchords at the Santa Barbara Bowl 2009, Funnier than I ever thought possible and their opening act, Arj Barker (plays Dave on FOTC), was hilarious. Watching him be nervous about dropping his first f-bomb in front a crowd that had a bunch of kids in the front was great. Also, Jermaine and Brett coming out in their Robot costumes but singing "Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor" was too great not to remember. They also jacked someone's blanket from the front row because it was cold.

I knew absolutely nothing about him, had never even heard his name mentioned, prior to Wakarusa this past year.
I was talked into going to see his set by a friend and I don't believe my jaw picked itself up off the ground until about 30 minutes post show. I was mesmerized.

Parliament
Went to Smokin' Grooves to see Cypress Hill, Outkast and Boyz to Men(they sucked live) but Parliament stole the show. Granted I had heard they were great live but still didn't expect the show they put on.

Not right on point, but I went to the Yeasayer show in New Orleans last weekend.
I really liked their 2nd album and was having trouble with their new stuff, but after seeing it live it all just made "sense."
Now I listen to it when I can.
First time seeing Rush too, but I knew they would be badass, and they were.

Keith Urban also. Went with wife to see him, not a country music fan, but he blew me away. I knew he was a talented guitar player, but his show presence was excellent also.
