But I'd put the run from Why Bother through Pink Triangle up there with any 5 song run on any other album. Because of that, I go Pinkerton

This is what happened to rivers, imo. Pinkerton saw him branching out, perhaps entering his creative peak. instead of hitting his stride, he walked away.

Happened to Mangum with NMH... I dont know if its a case of nothing left in the tank, pressure, spotlight... not sure, but it happen often..

This is one of the reasons I find Aja so amazing. 6th album. I rarely last more than 3.

Last couple of albums have been painful. They still have their diamonds in the rough. I don't even mind the green album.

I think Pinkerton is their "Paul's Boutique"

Pinkerton is greater as a work of art.
Blue is greater as a pop/rock fun listen.
I have actually loved all of their stuff through the years. Rivers evolution has been fascinating. Early stuff is still the best of course.

I think overall is might be the better album out of the two although they are both masterpieces.

I definitely like more of the songs on Blue. They're simple (for the most part) and always enjoyable.
Pinkerton's a weird listen and it took me a couple of years to truly appreciate the album as a whole. I only listen to probably four or so songs from Pinkerton on rotation. The content and self-reflection on Pinkerton have always resonated with me and it's definitely the more personal of the two.
Seriously though, that's two damn fine albums from front to back.

Absolutely. It got panned early on by critics and rivers went into a deep depression that essentially caused the band to break up for several years while rivers went to school in Boston

at least it wasnt all bad news.
the green album and on really shows what matt sharp brought to the band. their "divorce" robbed rivers of a songwriting partner and someone that would shoot him straight. unfortunately, the same is true of matt sharp. he really benefited from rivers influence as well.
