Does anyone enjoy or used to listen to their Surprise album? Randomly popped up on Spotify and I really liked the songs CDU and Tremble. Just want to know if anyone enjoys their music!!

My mom had a copy of Deluxe when I was growing up and I always assumed it was their first album. I wasn't really into them for a while but rediscovered them a few years ago. Played that album a few times driving across the southwest. Perfect soundtrack for a long drive across the desert.

Deluxe was the first CD I ever bought. I always assumed it was their first album until recently. It still is very good IMO and has stood the test of time.

Surprise was cassette only I think. Deluxe was their first "real" album that got national attention.

The lead guitarist on Surprise killed himself and the other three kind of reformed after his death and released Deluxe.

I had to check to see if I still have the cassette...

Ive always had a soft spot for this album... I always thought it was good college rock, before they kinda lost their edge..

Congrats ColeD23! 30 posts in, you post about BTE, and the board doesn't crap all over it!

That being said, I haven't heard "Surprise" but will give it a listen. Check out their LSU EP if you haven't already.

Those early days were fun... That first record is pretty crappily recorded and doesn't do some of the tunes justice...

I actually like Friction, Baby better than Deluxe, but haven't liked much from them since.

I need to dig around and see if I can find the cassette recording of when I interviewed them on KLSU circa 1987. I actually didn't think they were that great and was surprised when they hit it big.

My brother was a DJ at KLSU for a few years and interviewed them in the early 90's before "Deluxe" hit. His on air name was Brother John.

Was he at KLSU in 89 or 90? I did the local music show called Local Lobotomy that then became Saturated Neighborhoods from 1986 or 87 to 1989.

“Brother John” says “I was there about 89 to 94. I kind of remember that name for the show (Local Lobotomy), but I think it was already called Saturated Neighborhood when I took over (which was around 92-93).”

Yea, It was Local Lobotomy my first year hosting in 86 or 87 and then there was a big shakeup when we moved from the Stadium to Hatcher. The administration cracked down on a lot of the shenanigans that went on and the girl I co-hosted Local Lobotomy with either quit in protest or maybe was shown the door, its all fuzzy now. But they changed the name of the show as a clean break from the past for whatever reason.

I still have the cassette, and I have most of the songs on my phone. It's by far my favorite of theirs. I never understood why Kevin never did more with it.

Joel used to hang out at my apartment. His best friend was my room mate for two years. I took over for Kevin at Murphy's when he left to concentrate on original songs. I really missed them as a cover band because Kevin had the best taste in covers, ever. Even back to the Surfing Dachshunds.

They included Tremble on Artifakt(the b-sides & covers album) that they put out about 20 years ago & Circle of Friends was on the Empire Records soundtrack. I think those were the best songs on Surprise. So many bands were at their peak back then. We would have Ezra, Dash Rip Rock, Cowboy Mouth, Deadye Dick, & Stoneybridge, HSO(Ruston bands) playing all the time back then all over North Louisiana.

The early 90's was such a great time for live music in college towns in Louisiana. Ezra played some of our Fraternity parties at Tech back then.
