Dirt. Nevermind and Ten are the only better Grunge albums and not by a huge margin.
“Jar of Flies” is the best.

I agree there shouldn't be rankings or comparisons. Just my opinion, but I have often watched this video below, and thought there were very few that could ever do this. Cornell being one.
Grunge was weird because I specifically remember hearing vedder say he hated the label.
Very diverse set of tastes as well.
Loved STP and didn't care for Janes addiction but both reached pretty big heights in the grunge era. Neither would be classified by me as grunge.
Nirvana, Soundgarden, AIC, Pearl Jam top that list which I would need a qualifier of being somewhat Seattle or PNW related.

Bleach is the better Nirvana album.
But Nevermind is the popular one.
Both better than Dirt.
But for your question. . Dirt > In Utero

Awesome vid first of all.
You forgot the two who started it all.
Green River and Screaming Trees.
But yeah, to be grunge, you had to be from the Seattle area.
Jane's addiction? Had some really good stuff, but never an entire banger album. Smashing Pumpkins? Gish was the best almost grunge of the period. Didn't care for any albums after even though Siamese Dream had some really good songs.
I still bang my early 90's playlist quite often.

Dirt easily. I'd go as far as to say Alice in Chains were probably the most talented of all the Seattle bands.

I'm not sure who knows who coined the phrase "grunge" in regard to rock music
seems like none of the "grunge" rockers wanted to take credit for it

They were just slightly before I was aware of music. I've since grown to love both since their follow up bands are my favorites.
I grew up in the PNW in the 90s and vividly remember going to Seattle every summer.
That's what kids and families in the PNW did every summer. Go to Seattle. It was a such a grimy, flannel filled, dilapidated, run down city at the time that you could feel why it gave way to an entire music scene of its own.

Hair metal had become vapid and shallow, even Skid Row put out more meaningful music in the early 90s. (Slave to the Grind)
"Grunge" was a fresh relief with its introspective lyrics and darker themes.

In Utero with a slight edge for me, but I love both.

And a good number of world class bands come out in a matter of a few years. Pretty spectacular.
Was almost a mini version of what the UK was pumping out mid 20th century into the late90s.
