Best Music Scene in the US

My vote:
New Orleans
Most notably the birthplace of jazz. New Orleans music scene mostly includes jazz, blues, reggae, zydeco and funk. Music can basically be heard on every corner and the city is covered in legendary music venues. Places like Tip's, Maple Leaf, Frenchman St., and Preservation Hall give the scene a historic feel. Also, venues such as the Saenger, Joy, and Civic Theatre are being restored to their former glory with the Smoothie King Center reeling in the larger acts. Also has two huge music festivals, Jazz Fest and Voodoo Fest that brings thousands of people and great music into the city. Jazz Fest late night shows are some of my favorite times of the year

Louie Armstrong
Dr. John
Neville Brothers
Randy Newman
Professor Longhair
Irma Thomas
George Porter Jr.
Honorable Mention: Austin, TX
Although the scene is filled with it's fair share of country, it is still one that strongly supports local music. Free live music is prevalent throughout the entire city and is the king of the indie scene. The small town feeling of Austin gives it a more personal experience surrounded by beautiful landscape. Classic venues like the Stubbs, Elephant Room, Hole in the Wall, Parish, Victory Grill, Carousel Lounge, etc. Also larger venues such as Paramount Theatre and Moody Theater for larger acts. Also has two huge festivals, SXSW and ACL.

Hard to beat the DIY punk scenes in Nashville, and Louisville right now. But that's just my own biased opinion.

honestly, the best music scene concerning venues is colorado or seattle
for just music it's new orleans and austin. i prefer the indie shite in austin to the same funk group playing over and over at tips personally

Yarmony Grass is one of the coolest festivals in the US imo. The floating stages during the day is an awesome concept. Then to end the float at the bottom near your camp and stage gives it a different feel then a generic festival. I don't see how anyone would into enjoy this unless they despised the music that gets booked for it.

While I can't speak for the here and now, I loved growing up near the vibrant DC music scene. DC invented two subgenres of music, go-go and emo (sorry about the second one). Go-go is pretty much only played in DC, which gives the scene a pretty distinct flavor. It has a fiercely loyal local scene and its most famous local label, Dischord, will only put out acts that A) they like and B) are from DC.
Also, due to its military influence, DC is home to some of the best marches in US history. Unfortunately, its also home to a proliferation of inescapable choral groups. It's honor roll:

My vote...considering quantity, quality, and diversity...Nashville. Nashville has a plethora of free music festivals throughout their parks. They've got The Ryman, Bridgestone, Grand Ole Opry, The Bluebird Cafe, The Basement, Exit/In, and many more venues. They have a wide diversity of folk, Americana, country, bluegrass, psychedelic, punk, metal, singer songwriter, hip hop. Hell, even their karaoke there is serious serious stuff.

Nashville absolutely supports the creation of music but it is too much of a genre that I am not a fan of. I just prefer the NO atmosphere

i love New Orleans and all, but the music scene there really isn't very diverse compared to a place like Austin, which also has the most venues per capita in the country.

In my opinion, New Orleans is a lot more energetic. It is definitely not more diverse than Austin but I definitely think it is more welcoming. The Louisiana culture adds a lot to it as does the Texas culture
