This myth is still going on? It is well documented that Whitney lip syncs the national anthem before the Super Bowl LINK
From your link:

It is what it is. And there’s no doubt that Whitney sang it. So my answer to that, my response to that immediately was, ‘Yes, she sang live. But we used the track for the audio.’
A backup recording has actually been required by the NFL since 1993. Don Weiss wrote in his book “The Making of the Super Bowl” that a near-disaster scared the NFL into making a recorded vocal track a must-have.

Prince during Superbowl half-time in the pouring rain. Miami 2006
I've always loved the performance. Still, for Prince the one that has stood out to me was his solo during While My Guitar Gently Weeps as part of the tribute to George Harrison at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Multiple legends on stage and they all take a back seat to Prince for the solo.
If not limited to just award shows/halftime, I would nominate Van Morrison performing Caravan with the Band during The Last Waltz. Van is just on point (and lit out of his mind). Love the horns, the kicks, the way Van just walks off at the end. The energy is off the charts

I have limited experiences, but as far as the best I was ever in attendance for, is when John Mayer and Galactic jammed Immigrant Song at Jazzfest.

The Weeknd's Super Bowl Performance is the best vocal performance I've ever seen on TV.
So many people incorrectly assume his voice is auto-tuned b/c he makes electro-pop music. But it's not.
The Weeknd Live Super Bowl Performance 2021
I put this performance at number two behind Prince in the rain.

What is the best live performance you have seen on TV at an awards show/Super Bowl Halftime Show/Halftime/etc...
Love Talking Heads and The Name Of This Band Is....is a great live album but when did they play on tv during an awards/super bowl? People are just listing concerts. The correct answer is While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the RRHOF awards show, which also includes Prince who is on everyone's list.

If we’re just talking about greatest live performances I could fill up this board.
The man asked about performances on TV specials.

Black Sabbath - Don Kirschner's Rock Concert

The best of those TV shows was the 25th anniversary of Motown special.
I have seen Lionel Richie in concert several times and he is fantastic. Most recently was at Endymion about 2 years ago. He was shocked at the crowd at the Extravaganza. When they told him he would be starting at 1:00 am he thought he would be playing to an empty house. When he came on stage and saw the party in full swing he was thrilled.
I remember seeming the Commodores in Biloxi back in the day

Not The Eagles or Bruce Springsteen. Walked out of both concerts before I fell asleep.
