Just listen to "If I Fell". It's sublime. Half the Beach Boys stuff sounds like they are trying to do novelty tunes. The voices are almost cartoonish/gimmicky.

I would say Simon and Garfunkel are a pretty good Lennon/McCartney analog. I know Garfunkel has a much more clasically " beautiful" voice, but the harmony of the two is magical - well beyond what one might predict after hearing them individuallly.

I'm no expert on all of music history, but in recent times I've enjoyed hearing Foxes and Fossils perform live a couple times up close and personal.

A little off the wall but how about The Roches?

There's really nothing that they're not better than The Beach Boys at. ...vocals, musicianship, songwriting...

I’ll give you that the Beatles were the best in every category except harmonies. No one compares to the Beach Boys in that realm.

The Beach Boys were still pretty far back to a lot of the 50s acts... The Everly Brothers, The Five Satins, The Clovers, The Ames, The Coasters, The Moonglows, The Platters...

Not to mention the Beach Boys didn't have three vocalists that could compare to John, Paul and George.

Mike Love was pretty monotone, Brian's voice was God awful and Al Jardine was just pedestrian.

I thought Carl had the best voice of the 4 and it wasn't that special.

What??? We are talking about harmonies and you are the first person I’ve heard say that Brian was a god awful vocalist. Carl, Mike, Brian and Al were all great singers and Dennis wasn’t a slouch either.

I scrolled down for about 6 or 7 posts and did not see Crosby, Stills and Nash. Unbelievable. Suite Judy Blue Eyes alone should vault them to the top.

Not necessarily a big fan of their music, but Manhattan Transfer and ABBA need to be in anyone's top 5.

The Beatles were vastly bigger than all other acts for this reason

Yeah their catalog was better.

Their harmonies were not. Not even in the same ballpark really.

Beatles were better at a lot, and overall better in general. However harmonies are the sole thing the beach boys were absolutely phenomenal at. Everly brothers and four freshmen and groups like that can compare, but Brian was a genius with some of that stuff to another level.
