So many of the legends rate Campbell as one of the best. Along with Roy Clark.

For sheer influence Jimi and EVH.

Shawn Lane deserves mention. And as others have noted, the country pickers (Campbell, Clark, Atkins) merit mention.

All things considered, IMHO, EVH.

Too subjective. Heck, most people answering are only including rock guitarists and there are dozens of Jazz guitarists that are probably every bit as good or better technically than the guys mentioned.

But I do love Hendrix.

My list changes but for instrument mastery you have to include Van Halen, Steve Morse, Andres Segovia, Vai, SRV, Yngwie, Govan, and young talent like Billy Strings, Matteo Mancuso, and the guys from Polyphia.

Govan and Mancuso are probably the best technical players today, Shawn Lane and Danny Gatton are also monster players....both deceased.

My apologies…

When I said Derek, I thought we were talking current guitarists.

Got it be EVH, Hendrix, or Jerry Garcia.

This is too hard to do. Mick Taylor is overlooked but did a ton of influential Stones lead parts. Dead Flowers solo is so simple and obvious, yet brilliant.

People overlook Waylon playing essentially bass and guitar at the same time, doing bass riffs and playing lead parts at once while making a percussive sound with the string popping and constant bouncing around on notes (when you break it down and look it is super unique and difficult and I haven't seen many others truly do it in the wild), but he wasn't a "shredder."

Hendrix, Clapton, JP, are all a no brainer. Then you have the EVH's, David Gilmours up to Slash bringing all that shite back years later with his own twist.

Chet Atkins (spelling, I apologize) or some of those studio guys in Nashville could play anything and fused a ton of techniques/sounds into their own sound. Up to Vince Gill and those guys.

The girl from Heart shreds.

Living? Tim Henson has a serious argument. He’s probably the best “modern” guitarist.

Paul Gilbert, Yngwei, and Steve Vai are all still around from the 80’s shredders. Gilbert is my favorite of those.

Brad Paisley is arguably the best chicken picker currently, and Derek Trucks the best slide guitarist.

Robert Johnson. Officially, the first member of the 27 club.

I think Jimi is the best answer to an impossible question, but you could throw about 30 different names out there and I wouldn't argue with them. Very subjective and there is no right answer, but a lot of wrong ones IMO.

Everyone always names Jimi as the most influential, but I'd have to argue in favor of Robert Johnson for that title

Impossible task. So I’ll just list my top 4 if I could only listen to 4 guitarist ever again:

Gilmour
Hetfield
Adam Jones
Frusciante

I don't think it's objectively possible to pick a best guitarist.

This.

I hesitated for days to open this thread, dreading the arguments for ambiguous words like "guitarist" and "best". Finally did, and the above quote is the highlight of the discussion.

With that said, I'm going with Robert Fripp.
