Everyone always names Jimi as the most influential, but I'd have to argue in favor of Robert Johnson for that title
Very few people had actually heard Robert Johnson before the compilation album was issued in 1961. And even for several years after that it was mostly heard by blues fanatics like Brian Jones or Eric Clapton.

Brad Paisley is arguably the best chicken picker currently, and Derek Trucks the best slide guitarist.

Love these threads. Been playing guitar for 30 years. There is no right answer. But to me the better guitar players are the ones that make me try to learn music I don’t even listen to. Love paisley but if I get into country Brent Mason. Check out hot wired.

I went to the Gregg Allman Tribute at the Fox Theatre many years ago. He was still alive actually , and Brad Paisley was there and he killed it. I was very impressed because I didn't know much about that guy.

You obviously don't understand the English language.

Clapton himself has said he wasn't even the best guitarist in his band (Beck)

Very rarely does someone ever say they are the best at anything. They typically always nominate someone else.

It really is determined by the criteria as others have said. Does someone get “extra credit” for playing/writing their own music or more important being better/faster on a cover?

If two guitarists are equal in terms of technical skills, does the person who sings while playing get the nod? Are improvisational skills considered?

And so on.

Anyone else advertised as "World's Greatest Guitarist"?

Someone finally mentioned the great John Frusciante.

And it only took 3 pages.

That's actually kinda sad.

While he's not the "best" guitarist in the world, he's a terrific player and prolific songwriter...Kevin Cadogan.

Also honorable mention to Mark Tremonti.

I think there's not only the technical side of playing guitar, but also the evolution of translating a song from thought to the strings. There's so many "great" guitar players out there that can replicate material, but very few who can create AND play original songs. To be the best, you need to be able to do both imo.

Agreed. Being a virtuoso with world class technical ability does not always translate to being a great composer/producer/arranger/etc. This seems like the case in the classical world with world class guitarists who only play music composed and arranged by others.

Do folks like this have a place in the discussion??

Petrit Ceku plays all 6 Bach cello suites in one take, from memory, with his eyes closed. That's mind boggling to me.

Cello suites

Or this russian lady, you will not find a more dynamic and musical rendition of Mozart's Turkish March on the guitar. It's as if Mozart wrote the piece for her.

Vera Danalina - Turkish March

I say no. If the "best" is based on the complete package: playing, writing, producing, body of work, etc. then the correct answer is Jimmy Page.

Dimebag Darrell was extremely underrated. Pantera was never my cup of tea, but I could recognize his talent.

Wish Nuno would get more love, actually as well.

Been listening to Matteo Mancuso. Kid from Palermo absolutely can shred it and is technically outstanding

Right now? Richard Thompson.

Historically? Impossible to answer because it’s so dependent on genres and personal preferences.
