Tiny Dancer has to be the most popular I would think. I'm going to go with Border Song. It's just a well written song IMO. Real bluesy and he plays some really nice progressions.Heck, even Aretha Franklin covered it. If that doesn't have any weight to it..

Great song. I'm a sucker for a guitar being amped through a Leslie.

Too many to name and sometimes it depends on the mood I'm in.

Of the popular ones:
Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me
Someone Saved My Life Tonight
then I really like Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding And those songs are nowhere near alike.
Plenty of others I should list, just a quick list above. I do like all those mentioned already, although I think I've heard Bennie and the Jets too many times. And that was before that Katherine Heigl movie came out.

difficult choice with that kind of library, then the difficulty of discerning best from favorite...

I'll go Your Song & Candle In The Wind. I think people will still be singing those fifty years from now.

In fact, after Madman Across the Water, I think he strayed away from his best work even though his newer songs became even more popular. His earliest work was probably his best from a musical standpoint. Where to now, St. Peter Sixty Years On etc.

anything mentioned above is the correct answer...

It's funny, but Benny and the Jets, imho, is representative of the point at which Elton decided to go pure pop and commercial

let me fix this for you...Bennie and the Jets gargles balls and is one of the absolute worst songs of all time...that is all.

all of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is awesome, except for Candle in the Wind, I really can't stand that song anymore and it wasn't that great to begin with.

for me, the answer (my favorite, not necessarily the "best") would probably change at least on a daily basis...depends upon a lot of things.

a few that i always seem to be in the mood for:

ego
white lady white powder
social disease
i feel like a bullet (in the gun of robert ford)
blue eyes

Feels like that is what most people would gravitate to.

ETA: just read posts. maybe not on the MB, but i feel like that would be the one most peeps would think of first.
