You are correct, sir. In fact, after Madman Across the Water, I think he strayed away from his best work even though his newer songs became even more popular. It's funny, but Benny and the Jets, imho, is representative of the point at which Elton decided to go pure pop and commercial. I thought it was unfortunate in terms of pure musical significance.

Ditto. His earliest work was probably his best from a musical standpoint.
