They’re not overrated. Smells Like Teen Spirit/Nevermind represented a huge musical and cultural shift.

Not really. I don’t think anyone believes they are the greatest band, but they were the face, among a few others, of “grunge” music and the lead singer killed himself. There’s definitely a certain type of mystique that will come from that.

They made a few really catchy albums, and their unplugged album is still one of my favorite live albums. I think they are rated appropriately.

I feel like Nirvana is underrated on this board just because of how often I see them called overrated here.

Also this. If anything, I’d say this board overrates the shite out of Alice In Chains.

Pennyroyal tea is one of the best songs of the 90's. So no Nirvana is not overrated.

Foo Fighters are white suburban dad rock. So boring.

I love Nirvana but would agree they’re overrated. Got to see them live a couple of times and they were incredible live.

Why do you think they get so much praise here?

I mean frick, this board was obsessed with a Led Zeppelin knockoff for what felt like an eternity

As far as rock goes, this board is mostly stuck in the past so its no surprise people would love generic dad rock.

i love Nirvana but they were, in hindsight, the least talented yet the most influential of the 4 founding grunge bands. They caught fire and ushered in the death of glam rock which paved the way for the Nickelback type bands of the world to deliver bland and generic rock type music for decades. I am sure it was not what Kurt intended to be responsible for but it was lightening in a bottle.

Kurt's music was raw but almost unfinished and not well rounded out. His good stuff was really good and the rest was fine but In Utero was a pretty terrible way to go out. But the reason he was unique was he was the only one that could do his music. No one else can duplicate him. But make no mistake, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden were all superior talents and musically better. Kurt got all the credit though and Nevermind is a gem and the production quality of that album puts all of his other stuff to shame.

I think all this Nirvana crap started when I was in college and I mostly listened to country music, so I always kinda thought they sucked.

Your comments are well received, but it’d have been a lot quicker to just say Nirvana was more punk than those other grunge bands. Most of their songs were fairly simple, musically speaking, but there was a rawness to it that felt genuine and it resonated with me. I do think Nirvana gets too much credit for ushering in the grunge scene, maybe because Kurt blew his brains out. But I still love them, and Drain You will always be one of my favorite 90’s songs.

I think they are head and shoulders better than the other 3... In fact, only Mudhoney comes close, IMO...

I think Nirvana is seen as less talented because they had a more raw sound and only three members. Pearl Jam had two guitarists and a big arena sound. Jerry Cantrell and Kim Thayill are both better guitarists than Kurt plus Cornell's voice gave Soundgarden a bigger sound, but Superunknown was fairly mainstream.

For some reason people consider Grohl a great drummer even though there's really no evidence of that. Nirvana and Foo Fighters' music was always pretty simple.

QOTSA - Songs for the Deaf is the best evidence imo
