Anyone else old enough to remember the first video

that you ever saw on Mtv?
For me, it was Jack and Diane by John Cougar(can't remember if he had added Mellencamp by then). I can remember walking into the house, seeing the video on tv, asking my mom what it was, and her saying "some new channel that plays music".
It's almost as hard to believe that it was as huge and influential as it was for a decade or so as it is to see how irrelevant it's been for the last 20-25.
Video Killed The Radio Star and the internet and a lack of quality music to air killed Mtv.

First song was Video Killed the Radio Star.
Third song, IIRC, was Eddy Grant Electric Avenue.
You know, back when MTV was about music and music videos.

Correct.

Electric Avenue wasn't released until 1983, at least 16 months after MTV stared. The video didn't play until after Billie Jean which was released in early 83.
The third video on MTV was "She Won't Dance With Me" by Rod Stewart.

Did you see Video Killed The Radio Star at launch?
It seems like it was only available in a few areas in the country at launch. We got it in Chattanooga sometime in 82, I think.
I read or saw awhile back where the original VJ's had to go to some bar in New Jersey to watch the launch because NYC didn't carry them.

Yep, Bob and I watched it go live in Eugene, OR.
I stand by Electric Avenue being the third song played when MTV launched awhile later on the West Coast.
Obligatory: MTV.

Buddy of mine who lived in town (we lived 5 miles out) called me and said “dude we got MTV).
Hauled butt to his house and saw Hold Me. Fleetwood Mac.

The first one I remember is Thriller.

Thriller wasn’t the first I remember, but it was the first “must see”. The build up was incredible. We all rushed home from school for the debut. Even by today’s standards it’s a good video.

Not the first one I saw but it was early in the rotation and one of my favorites: Elvis Costello- Oliver’s Army

My first video that I remember was before MTV, I think it was on ‘Night Flights’ or something that came on late in the evening (not sure of name).
But I think it was ‘you got lucky’ by Tom Petty.

On actual MTV? Probably Bow Wow Wow - I want Candy. It's the one that sticking out at the moment.

Night Flight was great. I was too young to appreciate it as much as I would now, but you never knew what you'd get on there. Seeing a Three Stooges short at around 2 am was always a treat back then.

"Photograph" - Def Leppard is my earliest MTV memory.

I can remember Eminence Front being my favorite video when it was in heavy rotation on there. It seems like they had a "Farewell" concert that aired on HBO around the same time.

No idea what the first video was, probably something dumb like Vanilla Ice or Will Smith. The first video that I remember making a big impression on me, though, was RHCP’s “Other Side”

The first MTV vid I vividly remember was my first viewing of the then brand-new Quiet Riot "Cum On Feel The Noize." Man, that video sold a shitload of records. I bought "Metal Health" on cassette within 24 hours.
