I’ve managed to listen to him for years without knowing or giving a flying shite about this and I suggest others do the same.

In his case it's pretty hard to miss but a musician's politics are pretty far down the list of things I worry about when enjoying their music.

Because you would have slim pickin's if you did.

He’s amazing.
If you live in South Louisiana or the Gulf Coast, you need to listen to Hurricane Party. It’s great.

It seems that way, but it's not true.

I'm a big fan. Wife and I saw him solo at the Manship Theater last year and he was excellent. He's coming back in January with a full band.

I’ve been a big fan of his for a while, and hope go catch him at the Manship next time he comes. South Dakota is another great song I haven’t seen mentioned here yet.

Love that mf. Live in aught three is one of my favorite live albums ever
"He never met will Rogers, I'd be willing to say" is such a great burn

Big fan. I try and catch his Wednesday midnight shows at Continental Club whenever I can. It’s the perfect place to watch him. He’ll do songs with his band, let them break and he’ll do 3 or 4 songs solo acoustic on his 12 string guitar then bring the band back out and close with Choctaw Bingo or Too Long in the Wasteland. Always an eclectic crowd at his shows there.
His songs are so well written. They’re 4-5 minute stories but so detailed you can picture all in your mind. You Got to Me is one of my favorites. He wrote and recorded the album Complicated Game in New Orleans a few years ago.
I used to live next to him, would walk my dog and he would be out in his front yard with his cats messing with his boat or his yard. I would see him at Whip In sitting at the end of the bar trying to keep to himself.
During the 2016 election, after a show at Continental, some drunk frat boy walked up to JM at the bar and in a drunken stupor asked him “what do you think about the direction of the country?” JM gives him the biggest F-you stare and grabs two glasses of red wine and walks off. Said so much without saying a word, that’s how good this dude is. He has achieved a level of curmudgeon I aspire to reach.

I respect McMurtry. He's a tried and true bitter socialist revolutionary, he didn't become annoyingly woke overnight like some of other SOUTHEASTERN musicians I'm a fan of
He's also a brilliant songwriter and Complicated Game is a masterpiece IMO.

Ray Wylie Hubbard does a great version of his Choctaw Bingo.
Besides the obvious favorites (Levelland, Choctaw Bingo, Ruby and Carlos), my favorites are Hurricane Party, Down Across the Delaware, Ionlathe, Long Island Sound.
