Was there ever a band or artist whose music got better or even maintained the status-quo after sobering-up, kicking alcohol or drugs?

I wondered about this on the heels of the discussions of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, here. Cobain died a junkie; we never heard what Nirvana would sound like minus Kurt's issues with heroin...

Did he? I thought this was considered a myth and he was actually pretty sober during the time of his death.

I'm probably in the minority on this, but I hated pretty much everything that Aerosmith released after their comeback in the 80s.

So, not them.

Can't really think of anyone. Eric Clapton, maybe?

Aerosmith sold a lot of records in their comeback phase, but few would say the material stacked-up to their classic output in the 1970s.

Metallica's not been the same since James Hetfield kicked the booze. I'm happy for him and his family, but the tunes have suffered.

I think it has less to do with getting clean and more to do with getting old.

Being wealthy and happy absolutely is an impediment to songwriting. Being young, desperate, and full of piss and vinegar is prime time for song writing. Once you get over 40, that energy, spark, and rage just isn't there anymore, especially if you have a beautiful wife and kids.

Adam Sandler summarized it best:
When you're a teenager, you're like "f&%k school, f&%k my parents, f&%k the jocks, f&%k the stuck up girls"

When you're in your 20's: "F&%k college, f&%k my job, f&%k my ex-gf"

When you're in your 30's: "F&%k my boss, f$%k taxes, f&$k the government, and f&%k my annoying arse kids"

Once you hit 40, you're like "I'm hungry....I wonder what we have in the fridge? Eh, I think I'll just take a nap."

Motley Crue put out what is arguably their best album, Dr. Feelgood, after getting clean. They were at their best live on that tour.

Love their second phase or not, Aerosmith put out a shite load of hits after they kicked their drug habits.

If you're a big fan of his late career work you could make a case for Johnny Cash too.

I think Steve Earle did a lot of his best work after he cleaned up...

Jason Isbell’s best album came right when he got sober.

This is a really tough question btw. Slim pickings.

Phish had gotten absolutely terrible most nights at the height of Trey’s addiction. He was an embarrassing mess at Coventry. They are light years better today with him sober, though nowhere near where they were 93-98.

I saw them in high school on the Dr. Feelgood tour & they were incredible. Shockingly an amazing show.

After the reunion tour in 2005 they became a joke again. I am praying they bow out of the stadium tour set for next summer. They should have stopped when they said they were going to. Vince is a complete & utter disgrace. He just fell off the stage at one of his solo shows & broke some ribs. Unless he has weight loss surgery again there is no way he will be in good enough shape to do a stadium tour. I am seriously trying to think what band can take their place on the tour next summer with Def Leppard & Poison.

It was a fantastic show when I saw them on that tour. Below is the show I attended. The other times I've seen them have just been ok, which is the best Vince is capable of on a good night.
