This may be a well discussed topic but what are your favorite brands and your opinions on cutaway vs. traditional. Personally, I prefer a traditional style and I think my favorite guitars are the Taylors as far as playablility but I like the Martin look better. For the money though, I love Yamaha guitars and own a couple of them. The sound at that price point cant be beat in my opinion. I should add that I play kind of a traditional country/bluegrass/traditional gospel mix.

Also, anyone seen/have any opinions on the Orangewood Guitars? They seem to look great and have a great price point but I havent played one and was curious about them after seeing quite a few artists on social media talking about them.

Taylor’s and martins are what they are. So I’ll just say that my ibanez AW 54OPN, for $200 is very literally the best guitar I’ve played at that price point and is even better than some that are more expensive. You get a lot of damn good guitar for $200. I’ve also never seen a bad review of it either.

I just like to throw it out there for anyone looking for an affordable beginning guitar or something like that.

I really like the Taylors best, in their price range.

The median price range, I like the ones built by the Godin companies in Canada, Seagull, Simon and Patrick, A&L, Norman, etc. Alvarez Yaris made in Japan, are great too. Jap made Takamines and Sigmas also.
The Epiphone Masterbuilts are great, but they are made in China

After that, whatever is the best deal used.

Of the "old school" brands, I still prefer Guild. Probably because it was one of the first real guitars I played and it was an old one that resonated like a grand piano, but still.

I like Taylor slightly over Martin. For AEs with cutouts, I like Ovation. They seem to "do" and "get" Acoustic/Electric as much as anyone except, maybe, Takamine (which I am not crazy about, but give them props on their AE setups).

Yamaha and Seagull are typically very good values, but the marketplace has changed so much over the past 20 or 30 years, this may not be as clear cut as it once was. I do like Yamaha 12-strings, for example.

Eastman makes very good guitars in the 600-1K range. If you lust for one of the Taylor/Martins but don't want to spend alot check out Eastman. I have a Godin archtop that sounds a little bright for my taste, but it plays like butter. PRS doesn't make a bad guitar either.

I'll echoplex everything already said. I'll add that buying used typically saves you 50 percent over new or gets you 50 percent more guitar for your purchasing dollar, however you want to look at it, so explore the used market (Reverb, CL, FB Marketplace, eBay) before you buy. The used market is saturated and ripe for the picking, that's why I service old ones for a living versus selling new ones :)

I'll add a few other yet-to-be-mentioned names worth exploring in very general categories that haven't been mentioned. This is fast off the top of my head, I'm sure I'm horridly omitting something.
** High end: Bourgeois, Collings. If I was buying a lifer acoustic right now, those are the two brands to which I would be leaning.
** Upper tier: Gibson, Breedlove USA, Yairi
** Affordable pro/kick arse starter: Alvarez, Breedlove Atlas Series, Epiphone Masterbuilt Series, Guild's import series, Washburn

Taylors and Martins will always be the "top brands" for most people. I personally like the Gibson Hummingbird and J45 in that $2-4,000 range. In the $500-1,000 range it's really hard to touch the Canadian brands, like previously mentioned. I personally have a Seagull Maritime SWS which has a solid maple top and solid mahogany back/sides/neck. Can't go wrong for $800. Yamaha is a solid brand in that range as well.

I got a used Blueridge BR-163 last year for around $600, and it's still the best acoustic I've ever played. Plays so easily, and is soooo loud.

Blueridge

Hey, cut it out TheFretShack...no sense in driving up the prices of Yairis until I can acquire a few more, sheesh!
My best friend has a Gibson Custom Shop J45, it definetly sounds and plays nice, but my Yairi DY38 has considerably more volume and is just "that close" to sounding as good, and cost me about $3500 less.

To add to that, I've always found Yairis to have really good action.

If I'm going for budget, the Yamaha is a solid choice.

My best acoustic is a Breedlove cutaway. Had it 12 years and I still get tons of compliments on the tone. Love that thing.

Yep, I'm with you too...

Three of my five are Yiari's, one's a 12-String Martin for church, and a Washburn that I knew not to buy. I regularly play a couple Martins (a HD28V and a Golden Era???) and they sound a little better, but it's hard to drop the coins as they don't really sound that much better unless actively swapping them back and forth. Two of the Yairi's are cedar tops so that also has to factored in.

The Collins recommendations - yep !!! Had access to two with an old fiancé/flame and another not nearly as often. All three were surprisingly good every time I picked it up. That's my one day guitar at the moment.

My opinion will be of the minority, but I like Alverez. For my playing level, they just fine. I like the Gibson / Epiphone Hummingbird for their looks, but Gibson's quality has severely degraded recently.

I don't know about minority, though. Alvarez has a strong following, roughly on par with Seagull.

I have a Fender FJ 70 Jumbo that I bought new in ‘78. This is by for the best sounding and easiest playing guitar that I’ve ever played. Still play it almost daily.
Also have a Fender PM-1 Dreadnought NE All Solid Mahogany.
Several other classical and electric guitars.
Presently trying to narrow down a 12 string choice. Thinking Guild. Some many options.

I am afraid to play one. They are RIDICULOUS just to look at. Can only imagine how good one must sound.

I always mention Blueridge. They are a great guitar for being Chinese. Much like Eastman.
