This was setup by the success of Rocket Ride, another Ace tune that pissed Gene off.

Rocket Ride

To be fair, Ace was not in a good place then and of all the five songs on side four of Alive II, Rocket Ride is the only song Ace bothered to show up for. All other lead played by Paul or Bob Kulick (future member Bruce's brother)

Saw them last night on one of the first dates of this "last" tour. I was blown away at how good the singing still sounds. Paul should get some credit for essentially sounding the exact same as he did at 25. Whenever all 4 of them sang, it was great.

I hate all the KISS hate. Yes, plagued by some lousy production quality and filler over the years. But they still have a catalogue of 20-25 songs that can be distilled out of the pile and they are great.

Love Gun is a great example of KISS being vilified for doing something in the same vein as ACDC (only much better.) 3/4 of ACDC's songs are complete sophomoric nonsense (Sink the Pink) that hardly even have a melody. Love Gun has an awesome melody, great vocal harmonies, and manages to actually rhythmically invoke the feel of the song title itself. But prep schoolboy outfit good, theatrical face paint bad.

It was a great concert from a great band. Hate away.

Ha! To my grade school self... they were awesome!

KISS concerts in the late 70's were absolutely kick arse for the younger crowd.

This tour is only 3 shows in, and there are already videos out there that document Paul Stanley faking his vocals onstage. It's no wonder why his vocals have magically improved, because he sounded like arse when I saw them in 2014, and I doubt the 5 years in between improved them, lol...

KISS can’t scratch the surface of the greatness that is AC/DC.

I’ll be completely honest, if you completely deleted the entire kiss catalogue from history, it would impact my listening habits exactly zero. Kiss fricking sucks.

when I saw them a year or so ago, his vocals were shot. When they did an interview for Sirius XM in November, his vocals were strained then and that was before major rehearsals. I enjoy them and am only going to the Dallas show because my son wants to go - I was worried that Paul's vocals would not be improved. Also disappointed a little regarding the set list. Same all three nights.

Link? I'd believe auto tune or some harmonizing tracks, but "faking"? I'd like to see some proof of a claim that extreme. In any event, Gene sounds good too. And the other 2 are even better singers. The new cat guy does Beth by himself at the piano and it was great.

That's a silly metric. There's plenty of songs I never need to hear again, but I understand their relevance in the rock catalogue.

This is just silly. They wrote many songs anyone wishes they had written. Detroit Rock City is spectacular. Hard Luck Woman is an out-of-genre killer showing songwriting chops. etc. etc.

Unfortunately, I can no longer find THE most damning video, from the Kiss Kruise...someone was standing side-stage with a camera, and saw that Paul's teleprompter was color coded, basically instructing him when to "actually" sing and when to fake it. His faking parts were hardly convincing, so maybe the video got pulled for all I know, lol

Since I'm about to head to work, I just quickly googled and came up with these two:
LINK

LINK

Many threads about it on the fan sites, with accompanying video in some cases. No way his stage banter can be that rough AF, then suddenly pull it together for the songs. Longtime Kiss fan here, but it is what it is...

Who goes to a KISS concert for the singing?

They do have a ton of trash songs, but I respect the fact that they were cranking out an album practically every 6 months for a while instead of one every few years like most bands. But while they do have a lot of filler, they have far more really good songs than the overwhelming majority of bands - and several great songs/classics.

I was more of a KISS fan when I was 12 or 13 years old. Once bands like Motley Crue hit the scene, I didn’t listen to KISS much at all. But I’ve always been a fan and still enjoy cranking out stuff like Detroit Rock City and War Machine on my guitar.

And Destroyer is one of the greatest albums of all time.

I'm not watching those long videos, but can I ask what you mean by "stage banter rough as frick"? Because his stage banter the other night was almost TOO good. His shouting voice as you know can be a bit grating. It sounded as strong as ever to me.

Yep. God of Thunder is awesome too. It's one of the only songs that actually fits the "evil" imagery. Too bad it suffers from muted production. I'd like to hear it recorded with Megadeth style production.

Ok, so you don't have time to watch any long videos? Well, you'll only need less than 5 minutes for this:

Detroit Rock City A/B comparison from 1st and 2nd night of tour

Every act performing live is using the box.

Every...single...one. I'm not saying they're using it all the way on max or that they're using it for every vocal part on every single performance.

BUT, everybody has songs they hate to perform or don't have the chops to do it any longer. (Or the kids that were all image and didn't really have all that much talent in the first place.) And even if the lead diva can pull off most of the duties, the background singing is either pure pantomime or they're on the box.

It's a reality of modern "live" performances. Either live with it or go back to your studio albums. The "live" performance is more of an experience than musical event, anyway.

You baws need to relax and enjoy life, not get turned around on crap like 70 year old rock stars using autotune for live shows.

If a few of y'all would actually watch the video, you'd see this isn't auto tune or backing tracks...this is a pre-recorded LEAD VOCAL. I'd read a comment from the guy who put the YouTube clip together, and he's working on adding the Kiss Kruise version to the video as well, making it an A/B/C comparison, because Paul is faking it there too, all three versions identical.

And frankly, this wouldn't be nearly as much of a big deal, had blowhard Simmons hadn't spent years lambasting other bands/artists for doing the same thing, and/or Simmons & Stanley constantly punching down by publicly criticizing the diminishing skills of former bandmates...
