Ringo was really the first mainstream "rock drummer". His 4/4 style in rock and pop music caught fire. Bonham said something along the lines of "if you break it down, I basically play like Ringo with a little more speed and flair".
He wasn't the most skilled guy to ever hold the sticks, but he had a HUGE influence. He wasn't shite by any means.

Although I don't think MJ gets the credit he deserves as a vocalist. The man was one of the greatest voices of his era.

agreed. mj was a better singer than prince, but prince was/is better all around. no contest.

James Brown, MJ, and Prince all on the same stage for a jam session. The quality is bad, but the collective awesomeness makes up for it.

Bob Ross is probably a better technical painter than Van Gogh.. You're argument about Hendrix is fundamentally flawed. The guy changed the way guitar was played forever. Incredible tone, incredible chops, incredible stagemanship, but more than anything pure, absolute creativity everytime he picked up the guitar. If you have examples of modern players with more improvisational artistry, i want to see them..

You're argument about Hendrix is fundamentally flawed.
That's what you are saying?
Because that would be the only thing that could flaw my argument "fundamentally". I think Hendrix was really good.
Hell, he was great for his day. He was an innovator.
My fundamental point is that there are guys right now that are way better than Hendrix was. . .
It is similar to saying that Shaq is better than Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt was an innovator, he defined his position, he dominated his era.
But Shaq would have Wilt riding the pine.
And the argument that you shoehorn into a "fundamentally flawed" criteria. . .basically eliminates anyone from ever being better, no matter what.
And I can use the same to say that your premise is fundamentally flawed. . .because without the innovation of the guy who first invented the guitar, Hendrix would be a lute player.

Another knopfler fan here.Instantly recognizable, no one sounds like him.

Misfits influenced Metallica.
According to many in this thread, that makes Misfits better than Metallica.
Stevie Ray Vaughan >>>>>>> Jimi Hendrix. More soul, more blues, more talent and I don't care if Jimi influenced him or not.

Go back and read the "great guitarists" threads on here.
I'd say Buckingham is a better fit for the list. His genius goes far beyond playing the guitar.

This place.
The place we are having this discussion.

this place is not a good indicator of anything.
Which was my target audience.
And the guy who wrote the article seems to think it isn't so widespread.
If I were to go door-to-door asking people to name all the great guitarists they can think of, how many times do you think Prince's name comes up?
I would say 1 in 100. And that is if I poll 100 houses. . .including mine.

It really depends on the demographic. Most musicians know of Prince's talent.
There really is no point in saying A>B though. Most of the musicians mentioned in this thread are great musicians. Arguing Hendrix/Clapton/Page/SRV is retarded. All 4 are amazing and at that point it all boils down to preference.

Lets go race cars. you can have a model A, which has the most INFLUENCE... i'll drive a zonda, which has no "soul" but is all technicality.
That really doesn't make sense. A race is a finite measure of who gets to the line first. Music is subjective. you should be comparing the car's appeal like the lines, color, forms, or the way the engine sounds, etc. BTW, I'd take a fully tuned like new Model A over a zonda anyday.

And see how often he's mentioned by somebody NOT named Roaad.
I know I've put him down a few times on the MANY lists there have been.
I think he gets more respect than you think. I think the biggest problem is his music is more suitable to pop listeners than rock which we all know guitar legends of the rock genre seem to rule the lists.

My problem with including Prince is, it's never been a secret.
I would bet a majority of people have no idea prince even plays guitar, certainly not the people (non-musicians) in my generation (early-mid 20's).
