Relax, Clooney. Do us all a favor and don’t go to the fairgrounds this year so the rest of us can enjoy ourselves getting sunburned, drunk, and buying overpriced soft shell crab poor boys

I'm pretty relaxed, and I like jazzfest fine. I go multiple days every year and have a really good time. That said, there's a ton of room for improvement based on what other festivals are doing. And I feel like only people who never go to any other festivals claim that jazzfest has the best of anything; when in reality, it’s way behind what other places are doing. Plenty of other cities have night shows and plenty of other cities have good (arguably better) food. And I kind of think that since enough people keep repeating these false jazzfest talking points (best food, best whatever), it disincentives jazzfest from ever improving. It’s a mild annoyance, but no more.

Maybe everyone doesn't want to see Stanton Moore and Dumpstafunk and Dirty Dozen and Anders Osbourne for the 10th year in a row at 3 am

If you like blues/funk/soul/brass band etc sure Jazzfest is great. But that's pretty much all you're going to get, at the fest and the aftershows

There is more going on than, just not in the same quantity as what you mentioned, but in general that is what you are getting.

Can you give some examples as to what you think they should do better and what festivals are doing it so much better? Just curious.

ETA: also, aren't most other two-week music festivals, the same lineup both weekends?

That's a valid point. Although I'd argue that both ACL and Lollapalooza typically have more relevant music in one weekend than Jazzfest does throughout the entire festival. Again though, that's subjective and I guess it just comes down to what type of music you like. To me, Jazzfest is mostly a repetitive lineup of the same bands and musicians that you can see almost any week or month in New Orleans.

I guess you're right about the curfew thing, but that's also a pretty weird measure of a music festival that ends before dark every night.

It is a Just looking at ACL, its not a ton i would want to see although i'm sure i would have a blast if i felt like making the trip. Chance the Rapper / Jay Z would be cool, although i'm not really into rap, Portugal the Man, a few others. Similar to Lollapalooza (although they have a pretty good top line this year).

I think stuff like Russel Batiste and the Dap Kings, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Lukas Nelson, Jack White, Beck, David Byrne are all people i have seen once or never. Not sure about relevance although some of them are certainly relevant in today's music scene.

And the no curfew thing is relevant to the night show discussion as well as how i do the festival. Random guests walking in cause there are 4 venues on the same block, leaving one show and going to another across the street. And there is a wide range of acts, in addition to the blues, funk, soul, brass i usually get to catch some bluegrass, something interesting like the rolling stones tribute Karl Denson did the other year, etc.

The below in an earlier post is actually from Keith Spera's article in the Advocate...just giving credit where credit's due.

quote:

some scheduling nuggets:

On opening day at the Gentilly Stage, Sturgill Simpson will follow Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real and locals Jon Cleary and Eric Lindell. That’s worthy of spending the day camped out at Gentilly. On the second Friday, Beck will top the Acura Stage, preceded by Jason Isbell, Tank & the Bangas, Darcy Malone & the Tangle, and Motel Radio. That same day, the Gentilly Stage will feature the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, then Aaron Neville, then Sheryl Crow. (The Sheryl Crow/Beck scheduling conflict will be tough for some folks.) The second Saturday’s closing acts are Aerosmith at Acura, Anita Baker at Congo Square, Delbert McClinton at the Blues Tent and Dianne Reeves in the Jazz Tent. Cage the Elephant tops Gentilly, preceded by the Revivalists, Better Than Ezra, Boyfriend, Givers and Stoop Kids. Byrne will headline the Gentilly Stage on the first Sunday, preceded by New Orleans native and "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" bandleader Jon Batiste, who will front the late soul singer Sharon Jones' band, the Dap-Kings. Acura’s finale features Anders Osborne, Galactic, Jack White and finally Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, who have closed out Acura every year since 2013 in the Neville Brothers’ old slot.

When deciding whether or not to go see a musician perform, relevance is a factor that I don't think has ever gone into that decision. I'm not even sure how I'd go about determining an artist's relevance.

Jazz Fest is a poorly run, over-crowded shitshow compared to ACL, Lolla, or Shaky Knees. I know that's probably part of the charm for some people.

I've never really found it to be that challenging or problematic but it doesn't matter.

Again, I just don't think this is accurate. ACL alone has tons of legit restaurants and food trucks presented at the festival. I'm sure other festivals do too. Actually, Voodoo had arguably better and more modern food options this year than jazzfest has. It's just another outdated talking point

Haha...yeah, ok. Voodoo doesn't have as many food options as Jazz Fest. I'm not one of the Jazz Fest fanatics and usually find it too hot whenever I've gone, but I've been to many festivals, and for a music festival, the food is awesome and stands out (much like French Quarter Fest).

Aerosmith is fricking great live. Anyone who has seen them already knows this.

Last time they were in New Orleans in 2012 they opened with "Mama Kin" and following the song Tyler told the crowd "This ain't no fricking MTV or American Idol tonight!" and they tore the house down with all the classics.

Have absolutely no doubt they will deliver at Jazz Fest. They'll mix it up with some hits, blues, etc.

More "modern"? Maybe. Better and more? Hell no.

I absolutely agree with all of this. They'll be very good again at Jazz Fest guaranteed.

This x1000, Austin festival food is fine if you like burnt meat on a bun, burnt meat on a bone, burnt meat on a taco shell, burnt meat with beans.
