Zack wasn't overly obsessed with grades and getting ahead (Jesse), being a jock meathead (Slater), being rich and fashionable (Lisa), being hot (Kelly) or being a dweeb (Screech), he was just a cool academic underachiever who sometimes manipulated people for his own gain.
Scheming and plotting has nothing to do with grades, see also Jesse who had top grades but was dumb as a rock when it came to understanding PEOPLE.
And the way you overlook his many charitable and selfless acts makes me sick.

And the interests generally catered to everyones taste. As we all know, Zack and Slater (before he went all militant Chicano in College) were generally into blond hair/blue eyed girls and Kelly and Jesse had relationships for most of the show.
Now if they's kept using black guys as the villains, I think that probably would've raised some eyebrows.
