But 99% of the film's critics on this forum denigrate the film because of the politics, not because it was not a great film.

Well because

I don't necessarily disagree. I found it to be a very manipulative film.

Can't talk about the manipulation, probably the worst part of the film, without talking about why it was manipulative. Which was exactly because of its politics.

Crowe had just won Best Actor the year before and was also in some trouble over fighting or something.

I agree with this, so it really averages it out that he didn't screwed overall. I just thought that year he was so much better and actually desired an Oscar for his role in Beautiful Mind, whereas, I did not think Washington's role and performace was Oscar material.

Denzel just because of the "boom" meme we now have.

I disagree that SPR was just its opening. The scene where the nazi kills the Jewish soldier still gives me chills. I though it was a great movie that evoked a lot of emotion. SiL is a nice film and well made but IMO doesn't (obviously) have the impact of SPR or any rewatchability at all.

What are some of the most glaring examples of either films or actors that either did not get nominated or did and were not awarded.

To me it is the fact that true comedic giants of the industry, such as Harold Ramis, have eulogies without Academy award winner by their name. An honorary Oscar would have been the most appropriate, and I feel as though that category truly honors the people that have "mattered" in the industry. They weren't just progressive; they had staying power and kept progressing.

But in general, it is always shocking to me that modern Hollywood is so bent on gravitas, it can't see the brilliance of comedy as an artform.

We've got Noah, Son of God, and Heaven is For Real coming out in the coming months. Wonder if any of these conservative, Christian values movies will be nominated next year?

Fargo should have won over The English Patient in 1996.

As for this year, it makes no sense that Daniel Bruhl wasn't nominated for his portrayal of Niki Lauda in Rush. It was as perfect a portrayal as I've ever seen.

Can't really comment in this thread, I place Rocky Balboa (Rocky 6) in my top five all time movies.

I see similiarities with Washington/Crowe and Forest Whitaker winning over Leonardo. Forest was getting payback of the former oversights.

Also, Sean Penn winning for Milk was bullshite. The Academy didn't even try to hide their agenda with that one.

Mickey Rourke was the clear winner that year.

I agree about Crash, but Munich shouldn't have even been nominated. Terrible movie.

That Officer and a Gentleman was not nominated for best picture in 1983...

1982 Coal Miner's Daughter should have won best picture over Ordinary People

Ordinary People and Annie Hall are two movies that critics keep trying to justify.

Outside of the first 15 minutes, SPR does absolutely nothing new. But a movie is more than an opening.

Since when does a movie have to do something new to win Best Picture? Shakespeare in Love was a clever film, I love it, but Saving Private Ryan has impacted the film industry more so than Shakespeare in Love despite doing "something new".

Saving Private Ryan is a technical masterpiece.

As Good as it Gets is as overrated as it gets. Neither Jack Nicholson nor Helen Hunt should have won their Oscars that year. Good Will Hunting is a great movie but I prefer LA Confidential and Titanic over it.
