I first saw this movie when I was 17 and did not care for it. I didn't hate it or anything.

Then 10 years later I really discovered Mel Brooks and fell in love with his work.

I have seen Young Frankenstein probably 5-10 times now. I enjoy it.

It's not so much a LOL type of comedy. It's just a great performance by all the actors.

Alright. I’ll give it another watch or two. I don’t know if it was my mood or what, but I was expecting to be laughing from the get go like any other Mel Brooks film.

May I know your age range?

If you are private then it's cool.

Have you seen High Anxiety or Men in Tights?

High Anxiety is probably my favorite Mel Brooks movie.

Young Frankenstein

First time ever watching this. I tried to get into it, especially given Mel Brooks’ track record. But I couldn’t ever really feel a flow with it nor found myself laughing like normal at a Brooks’ property. I didn’t get the same feel for this movie as the rest of the Brooks’ properties.

Dr. Frankenstein:
No matter what you hear in there
no matter how cruelly I beg you
no matter how terribly I may scream
do not open this door or you will undo everything I have worked for
Do you understand? Do not open this door.

Inga: Yes, Doctor.
Igor: Nice working with ya.

[Dr. Frankenstein goes into the room with The Monster. The Monster wakes up]

Dr. Frankenstein: Let me out!! LET ME OUT OF HERE!! GET ME THE HELL OUTA HERE!! What's the MATTER with you people?! I was JOKING! Don't you know a joke when you hear one? HA-HA-HA-HA. Get me out of here!! OPEN THIS DOOR OR I'LL KICK YOUR ROTTEN HEADS IN!!! MOMMY!!!

This movie is so well-written.

quote:

Dr. Frankenstein: [to The Monster] Hello handsome. You're a good looking fellow, do you know that? People laugh at you, people hate you, but why do they hate you? Because... they are jealous. Look at that boyish face. Look at that sweet smile. Do you wanna talk about physical strength? Do you want to talk about sheer muscle? Do you want to talk about the Olympian ideal? You are a God. And listen to me, you are not evil. You... are... good.

[the Monster starts to cry, and Dr. Frankenstein hugs him]

Dr. Frankenstein: This is a nice boy. This is a good boy. This is a mother's angel. And I want the world to know once and for all, and without any shame, that we love him. I'm going to teach you. I'm going to show you how to walk, how to speak, how to move, how to think. Together, you and I are going to make the greatest single contribution to science since the creation of fire.

Inga: [from outside] Dr. Fronkensteen! Are you all right!

Dr. Frankenstein: MY NAME IS FRANKENSTEIN!

It's paced very much like Blazing Saddles - the humor is just based on classic monster/horror movie tropes and not westerns. There are fewer "in your face" jokes, and more slow burn jokes, but most of the cast is playing it straight, most of the time (maybe not Feldman) and the laughs are strategic, just like Blazing Saddles.

Teri Garr was the epitome of "The Girl Next Door" look back then. Cute, but not overly gorgeous, down home and not pretentious.

She looked like she could be approachable by some average Joe, unlike many of the "glamour girl" actresses back then.

Shame she's not really aged well, but then again, neither have I.

That look doesn’t age well in general.

Her on-screen daughter from Friends, Lisa Kudrow, has aged poorly compared to her co-stars as well.

High Anxiety got about two laughs out of me. I deplored it.

Young Frankenstein is pretty good, but slightly overrated. I don't begrudge the OP. I have no complaints about the movie; I just don't think it's quite as funny nowadays compared to Zucker Abrahams Zucker movies in the same vein. I'd rate Young Frankenstein a 7 out of 10.

I honestly feel like Blazing Saddles stands above everything else Mel Brooks did because of Richard Pryor's work on the script. The scenes involving Mel Brooks slow the movie down, I think.

IMO it’s the funniest movie I’ve ever seen.

However, I do agree with the other poster that in order to fully appreciate it, you’d need to be familiar with, and probably have a fondness for, the old universal monster movies it parodies.

I would put the Gene Hackman scene up against any other as the best comedic scene ever. It ranges from silent film slapstick to the most subtle sarcastic humor...

"My name is Harold, and I live here all alone. What is your name?"

"UHNNNNnnn."

"I didn't get that."

Yep. Kudrow does/did look a good bit like Garr when younger and I can see where she's going to probably end up very similar to Garr as she gets older.

I may need to give it another chance as well. I've only seen it once a long time ago. I laughed a couple times, but didn't think it came close to Blazing Saddles or HOTWP2.

I was like that for Monty Pythons Holy Grail.

Not sure what to expect going in, but damn, rewatched a few dozen times.

I will never not laugh when the monster sings his part in "Putting on the Ritz". I really like the movie, but will watch the whole thing just for that scene.

Does Kudrow have Multiple Sclerosis? Because the treatment for that is just devastating for most people and definitely affects the appearance.
