Scenario: You have time to watch one film and you are in the mood to watch Harry Potter. Which film do you choose?

Me: Goblet of Fire

Half-blood prince is a great watch, Snape was amazing in that film.

3: Prisoner of Azkaban

Gary Oldman is awesome. Great mix of light/fun Harry Potter and dark/serious Harry Potter. The scene with Buckbeak flying is awesome with the John Williams score.

Depends on my mood, but almost certainly not Chamber of Secrets.

Could probably talk my self into any of the others.

Yes, that is definitively the wrong answer.

Have you read the books? Snape and Harry’s final encounter in the books is epic as all frick. In this one Snape just seems mildly annoyed at Harry and more annoyed with Bellatrix and just says he’s the HBP in passing. No fault of Alan Rickman but entirely on the direction.

Prisoner and Goblet, to me, are the very best of the series. We learn more about Hogwarts’ past, meet important former students/new teachers and finally see Voldemort in all his evilness.

The acting (from the young cast) is dramatically improved. The narrative direction shifts jarringly (In a good way) as the cast move from being children to teens.

The score for Prisoner is thematically dramatic- very impressive.

Didn't read them but listened to all of them on Audible, Rickman was great in all of the films.

Honestly I think it’s a tragedy they didn’t get Cuaron back for the final 3 films. Should have filmed HBP and DH Parts 1 and 2 simultaneously Lord of the Rings style. I don’t think DH Part 1 would be much different, but HBP would have stayed focused on Harry, Dumbledore, Snape, and Draco and sidelined Ron and Hermione for a film. They only did 2 of the memories from Voldemort one of which was the least valuable memory Dumbledore shows Harry. They fricked up HBP so badly that they had to remove the best scene in the film because it tonally clashed with the rest of it, when that scene should have been the tone of the entire film. And that’s not to bring up the Death Eaters getting shithoused at a tavern on Christmas and proceeding to burn the Weasley’s house down which is entirely pointless.

And with DH Part 2, no way that finale would have been anything close to what was in the film. Cuaron would have told that hack producer who wanted some epic final duel between Harry and Voldemort to frick off. He would have done that ending justice, although I’m not sure he would have thrown the epilogue to the curb as he should have.

Would you be opposed to a remake of HP but as a TV series?

HBO is going to need something in its belt, and Game of Thrones isn’t going to do it. With Amazon having Lord of the Rings, Netflix having Avatar the Last Airbender, and Disney having Star Wars, HBO’s retaliation is a no brainer. I’ll be shocked if a Harry Potter series by HBO is not announced by the end of 2021 since they have the rights to the property.

But yeah, I’m for a show format. I think it could be done if done correctly with 10 episodes a season. It’s going to cost HBO a metric shite ton, but given what their competitors are planning on investing in 3 properties, I don’t think they have a choice.

They absolutely butchered the ending. It was a great adaptation up until the moment of the finale, and they fricked everything up.

They need to redeem themselves after how they ended GoT.
