Worst (non)product placement decision in a movie?

In the book “E.T.”, the candy Elliot lures ET into the house was M&M’s. I’ve always heard Mars Candy Co opted out because they thought the movie would bomb. So the movie went with a new candy, Reese’s Pieces, making it one of the hottest candies at that time. Maybe M&M’s was so established, they didn’t need the boost from the movie.
The other one is Mattel in “Toy Story” (the first one). If you didn’t notice, there was no Barbie (or any other Mattel toys) in “Toy Story”. They sure did jump on that bandwagon come the second movie.

Thread title confuses me

In the book "Mac and Me" they had a dance party at Wendy's and they changed it to McDonald's for the movie. It's weird how similar those two movies are.

Never leave the cave without it.
I just posted the most embarassing product placement I could think of because I'm not sure what your thread title is looking for.

I'll post the scene from Wayne's World where they satirize product placement.

I don’t think the Taco Bell drop in Demolition Man was bad. It’s probably accurate. You know Taco Bell will be around forever.

So I just googled fast food tie ins from 90's movies. The GOAT for me was this lollipop from Phantom Menace.

You know some girl Star Wars fans used that for more than just a lollipop. Jar Jar getting all the tongue action

+1 for thinking a little outside the box on that one.

Just noticed that the card is a “GothCard”.
Never noticed before.

Learned this in a marketing class
UPS turned down the film “castaway” with tom hanks bc they thought using its brand in tandem with a plane crash would tarnish its public image. UPS was by far the biggest name in shipping and logistics in the world at the time. FedEx jumped at the opportunity and created an equal footing in brand recognition and ended up becoming the other logistics giant directly after

California Raisins in Back to the Future. They paid their product placement fee but had to have it refunded when (as it turns out) - raisins aren’t the most photogenic of foods.

During the production of the 2018 film The Shape of Water, director Guillermo Del Toro remarked of the creature of the film "[The] character is called 'Charlie' on the call-sheet by reference to the StarKist mascot Charlie the Tuna. 'We wanted to play the ad on TV,' he says, 'but StarKist didn't want to have anything to do with a movie like this. The nickname stayed.'"
The Shape of Water received thirteen Oscar nominations and won for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.
Sorry, Charlie. Dumbass StarKist missed the boat.

It always annoyed the shite out of me the way demolition man completely and totally sold out to taco bell. It was just so unapologetically cheesy.
