If you read the books, you'll see that Cruise just does not work as Lestat. I don't know exactly how to explain it, just know he's NOT Lestat de Lioncourt.

I read them all and agree with you. Anne Rice had Rutger Hauer in mind, and didn't like when Cruise was cast and said so publicly. After seeing the movie though she changed her mind.

As far as bad casting otherwise, Sophia Coppola has been mentioned several times for Godfather III. But we can't ignore George Hamilton who was cast in GIII once Robert Duvall bailed because he couldn't get Pacino billing or money. Hamilton had already become a sun-tanned joke in Hollywood at that point, hadn't been in a movie for almost 10 years (and most of those were comedic schlock), and was only doing TV spots and game shows. I don't know how Coppola thought the audience could take him seriously as the Corleone lawyer.

Lestat describes himself as six feet tall. He has blond hair that is not quite shoulder length, and that is rather curly, which sometimes appears white under fluorescent lighting. His eyes are grey, but they reflect the colors of blue or violet easily from surfaces around them. He has a short narrow nose, and a mouth that is well shaped, but has always been slightly large for his face. His mouth can look very mean or extremely generous, but always sensual.

So they should've ignored acting ability and charisma for someone who has the right nose and mouth? Anne Rice admitted she was dead wrong about the casting of Cruise, and in my opinion he stole the movie right out from under Brad Pitt who was supposed to be the star. In fact I've read that Pitt was a little bitchy during filming because he realized it

OP has a pretty good nomination for worst casting, but I think either Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones or Marlon Brando as Vito Corleone are probably worse.

How is this only (presently) 5/10 uv/dv and not 0/15 or 0/1,573?

Richard Gere as Sir Lancelot in First Knight

Like a bunch of these, I would classify it as Clunky but worked out okay, decent.
Same with Cruise as Lestat.

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Easily the worst cast in my opinion if you read any of the Reacher books.

Was coming to post the same thing. I still enjoyed the movies, but not even close to the book’s character.

seems to be a common occurrence that Cruise is "miscast" but then the movie still ends up being awesome. i guess that's just proof of what an excellent actor he really is.

not saying i necessarily agree or disagree with the comments about him in various movies...just an observation.

Agreed. But Pesci in Goodfellas is NOT one of them. Didn’t he win an Oscar for that role?

Was one the greatest Oscar speeches ever, walked up on the stage and said “Thanks for this.” and walked off.

another vote against tom cruise as jack reacher...even though I still enjoyed the movie

But for me, Meryl streep was miscast in both Bridges of Madison County and Mamma Mia

Meryl Streep is miscast in everything because she, in fact, sucks.

I don’t know. I figured in an effort to go legitimate, Michael didn’t want to use an obviously mobbed up lawyer.

Probably figured he needed some hot shot LA lawyer type that didn’t look like a mob shill. The opposite of what people would expect.

Agreed….and I actually really like Michael B Jordan, but to anyone who had read the book they totally butchered not only the caring but the whole story.

She immediately came to mind. She single-handedly ruined Godfather 3.
